After being released by the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 26, Hunter Renfrow fielded calls from multiple NFL teams. But the former Clemson hero made one thing clear: he would only return to football in Charlotte.
“Just because this is home for me, this is what I wanted to do,” Renfrow told reporters. “I was either going to be here or not play.”
Faith and Family Guide the Path
Renfrow, 29, tied his decision to faith, family, and familiarity. He compared it to his Clemson walk-on story — choosing the Tigers over other offers because he felt it was God’s plan. Before re-signing, he and his wife took a couple of days to confirm it was the right move for their family.
A lighthearted twist nearly complicated things: Renfrow admitted he missed “10 phone calls” from Panthers GM Dan Morgan, head coach Dave Canales, and his agent because his young daughter declined them while watching Bluey.
The Comeback Story
Renfrow originally signed with Carolina in April while attempting an NFL comeback after missing the entire 2024 season due to ulcerative colitis. He previously spent five seasons with the Raiders, tallying 269 catches for 2,884 yards and 17 touchdowns. His best year came in 2021 when he posted 103 receptions, 1,038 yards, and nine TDs, earning a Pro Bowl nod.
What’s Next
Renfrow, a two-time national champion at Clemson, is expected to make his Panthers debut this Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. For the former Tiger, it’s not just a return to football — it’s a chance to continue his story exactly where he believes he’s meant to be.
