Another Tuesday has arrived and that means we will once again get a look at the updated College Football Playoff rankings. It will be interesting to see what the selection committee will do with Clemson after the Tigers' narrow win at Pitt in week 12.
This past weekend saw a number of playoff contenders stumble. For instance, Big 12 contender No. 6 BYU saw its undefeated season come to an end thanks to a 17-13 home loss to Kansas. That should drop the Cougars considerably in this week's rankings.
Meanwhile, No. 7 Tennessee lost a tough road game at No. 12 Georgia 31-17. That's the second loss of the season for the Volunteers but each has been on the road so how much will the committee penalize them?
Also in the Big 12, No. 16 Kansas State had an inside track to the conference title game until losing at home to unranked Arizona State 24-14. Now, it is the Sun Devils who could play their way into that conference's title game. Will they find themselves in this week's rankings with an 8-2 record?
Meanwhile, the two teams in front of the Tigers in the most recent playoff rankings, No. 18 Washington State and No. 19 Louisville, were upset this weekend. The Cougars fell at New Mexico while the Cardinals fell at Stanford. Thus, it is easy to envision Clemson jumping those two teams at the very least.
Right behind Clemson at No. 21 last week was South Carolina. Like the Tigers, the Gamecocks pulled out a late win this past weekend as they defeated Missouri 34-30 in Columbia. Therefore, it is likely that the Tigers and their in-state rival will be ranked right next to each other again in this week's rankings reveal.
Of course, Clemson should want South Carolina to be ranked as high as possible when the two teams meet to end the regular season next weekend. That's because that game will potentially be the final opportunity for the Tigers to impress the committee. So Clemson fans will be tuned in tonight to see not only where the Tigers are ranked but also where South Carolina is slotted.
