After last week's defensive disaster, this was the perfect antidote. Clemson's defense returned to form in a 24-10 victory over Florida State, completely shutting down the Seminoles' offense and reminding everyone what this unit is capable of.
While the offense wasn't explosive, it was mistake-free. Cade Klubnik managed the game, the defense created two turnovers, and kicker Nolan Hauser was perfect. This was a classic, complementary football win that gets the Tigers back on track.
Here are the final grades for Clemson's 4-5 team after a much-needed victory.
Clemson Tigers (4-5)
Offense: C+
This performance wasn't pretty, but it was effective. The offense put up a modest 319 total yards, and the running game struggled to get going (98 yards on 36 carries). However, QB Cade Klubnik was efficient (20-for-27, 221 yds) and, most importantly, did not turn the ball over. He accounted for both Clemson touchdowns (1 passing, 1 rushing). The 4-for-15 on third down is a major concern, but they were perfect on 4th down (2-for-2) and controlled the clock for over 34 minutes.
Defense: A
What a difference a week makes. This unit won the game. They held FSU to just 10 points, forced two crucial turnovers (an interception by Ricardo Jones and a fumble recovery by Jeremiah Alexander), and lived in the backfield. The defense racked up 6 sacks and 9 tackles for loss. After getting embarrassed last week, this was a statement performance of dominance and discipline.
Special Teams: A+
This unit was flawless. Nolan Hauser was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, nailing kicks from 40, 23, and 43 yards. He was responsible for 9 of the 24 points and didn't miss. The punt team was also solid, pinning FSU inside the 20-yard line three times. No returns, no mistakes, just perfect execution.
Overall: B+
This was the definition of a solid, team win. The offense did just enough and didn't make mistakes, while the defense and special teams were outstanding. This is the formula Clemson needed to get back in the win column.
