From the hardwood to the gridiron, one former Clemson basketball player has traded his basketball shoes in for shoulder pads.

Just a little under seven months ago, in late March, a Clemson tight end was dropping eight assists and two rebounds in the NCAA tournament, albeit in a loss to McNeese in the first round; now, he is catching passes from future NFL quarterback Cade Klubnik. Ian Schieffelin was a four-year player for the Clemson basketball team and has now turned his attention to playing tight end for Dabo Swinney in his final year of eligibility. On Saturday, Schieffelin got his first reception as a tight end.

Schieffelin was named to the Second Team All-ACC for the 2024-25 season, averaging 12.4 points per game, 9.4 rebounds per game, and 2.7 assists per game. During his four-year basketball career at Clemson, Schieffelin averaged 8 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game, and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from the three-point line.

Schieffelin got his first taste of live college action on Saturday with his one reception. The former veteran basketball player, who was on the Elite Eight team, would have liked his one catch to go a little better. Schieffelin’s one catch resulted in a one-yard loss. However, Schieffelin even earned a redzone target with a jump ball but could not come down with the catch.

A distinguished basketball player is taking on the challenge of trying to be a tight end in a Power 4 conference and got his reception on a jet sweep pass. Although it was not what Schieffelin probably had in mind for his collegiate catch, but at least he got a touch.
