Inside Death Valley, we’ve seen it from day one: Avieon Terrell is cut from a different cloth. With the NFL Draft on the horizon, the Draft Godfather himself is finally echoing what every Clemson fan has been saying all along. Terrell isn’t just a pro-ready playmaker—he’s got the kind of heart and grit that you can’t measure with a stopwatch or a tape.
When ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. rattled off his favorite prospects, it was no shock to see our guy front and center. The NFL world might be obsessed with measurables, but Kiper is watching the same film we are—seeing Terrell flat-out dominate every Saturday in the secondary.
The Kiper Seal of Approval
Kiper lumped Terrell in with Indiana’s D’Angelo Ponds and Duke’s Chandler Rivers, pointing out that while they might not have the so-called ideal length, they’ve got the kind of grit that wins games when it matters.
“I went three-deep at cornerback, but Terrell, (Indiana’s D’Angelo) Ponds and (Duke’s Chandler) Rivers are all somewhat similar as prospects,” Kiper said. “All three have versatility, but are likely slot corners in the NFL. Terrell is 5-foot-11 and 186 pounds. Ponds is 5-foot-9 and 182 pounds. And Rivers is 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds. Not the most ideal size across the board.”
Spunky Football, True DBU Grit
If you’ve watched Terrell blanket the ACC’s top receivers, you know those 27 pass breakups and three picks didn’t happen by accident. That’s pure football IQ and Tiger toughness. Kiper sees the same spark that’s made Clemson’s DBU pipeline the envy of college football.
“But they all play a spunky brand of football,” Kiper noted. “They maximize their ability with sound route recognition, good awareness and a knack for making plays. Ponds used his explosion (43½-inch vertical jump at the combine) and ball skills to tally seven picks and 27 pass breakups over three seasons. Rivers nearly matched Ponds, with seven INTs and 23 pass breakups over four years. He locates the ball well and can then plant and drive with his 4.4 speed. And Terrell can flip his hips, stick on even the fastest receivers and then find the ball at just the right moment. He had three picks and 27 pass breakups over three seasons.”
A Second-Round Steal
Terrell’s versatility in orange and regalia, sticking with the fastest guys and attacking the ball at its highest point, has Kiper convinced he’s a day-two steal. Whether he’s punching the ball out or getting a hand on a kick, Terrell’s impact jumps off the screen.
“Terrell, Ponds and Rivers aren’t shy about contact despite their frames. They’re tough cornerbacks,” Kiper asserted. “And I’d bet all three do a lot of the same impactful things they did in college, pick off passes, force fumbles, block kicks, etc., in the pros. Terrell and Ponds are second-rounders to me, and I’d say Rivers comes off the board in the third or fourth round.”
In a league where toughness is gold, Avieon Terrell is about to make one NFL team feel like they hit the jackpot. That’s what happens when you draft a Tiger.
