osing two of the most dominant defensive linemen in college football to the first few rounds of the NFL Draft would normally trigger an absolute panic for a college football program. But in Tigertown, they don’t rebuild the defensive front—they reload it.

ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy released his highly anticipated rankings of the top 10 defensive line units entering the 2026 season. Despite an offseason defined by massive professional departures and heartbreaking medical news, Clemson firmly checked in at No. 4 nationally.

While the national consensus might view the unit with a bit of skepticism, McElroy is aggressively bullish on the Tigers' ability to keep the defensive pipeline flowing.

“For many programs, that would not just be subtraction — that’s a detonation," McElroy said of Clemson's offseason roster turnover. "And yet here we are, talking about Clemson being in the top four again. Because this is what Dabo Swinney does. If you look at since 2019, the Tigers have put nine defensive linemen in the NFL Draft. The developmental pipeline does not stop.”

The New Alpha: Will Heldt's Time to Shine

With premium edge-rusher T.J. Parker (Buffalo Bills) and defensive tackle Peter Woods (Kansas City Chiefs) now playing on Sundays, the mantle of leadership officially passes to rising senior defensive end Will Heldt.

After transferring in from Purdue prior to the 2025 season, Heldt put together a spectacular, disruptive debut campaign in the Upstate. He quickly established himself as one of the most feared edge defenders in the ACC, earning third-team All-ACC honors.

Heldt's monster 2025 stat line sets an elite baseline for the 2026 front:

  • 48 total tackles (1st among Clemson defensive linemen)
  • 15.5 tackles for loss (Led the team)
  • 7.5 sacks (Led the team)
  • 4 pass breakups and 1 forced fumble

McElroy projects Heldt as a player who will carry a massive chip on his shoulder this autumn, easily positioning himself to sneak into the early rounds of the next NFL Draft.

Navigating the Personnel Puzzle

Defensive run-game coordinators will have their hands full patching up an interior depth chart that has grown incredibly thin over the last few months. Alongside Woods and Parker, staple tackle DeMonte Capehart departed for the NFL (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), and Stephiylan Green transferred out to LSU.

Tragically, the Tigers will also be without projected star tackle Hevin Brown-Shuler, who is rightfully stepping away from the gridiron for the 2026 season to undergo treatment and recovery following a Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis. To add injury to insult, incoming transfer Kourtney Kelly suffered a torn ACL during spring practice.

The National Landscape

McElroy acknowledges that the depth questions on the interior are entirely legitimate, but his faith in the scheme and the culture keeps Clemson in elite company. The Tigers sit comfortably ahead of heavy hitters like Michigan, Georgia, and Oklahoma on his board.

McElroy's Top 5 Power 4 Defensive Lines (2026):

  1. Oregon
  2. Texas
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Clemson
  5. Ole Miss

The Tigers are entering the season under the radar in multiple position groups, but the defensive line remains the undisputed heartbeat of the program. Expect this group to play with a ferocious edge when they take the field in Baton Rouge.
