If you tuned in to the latest Cover 3 Podcast, you’d think Clemson football was being wheeled into the morgue. Danny Kanell and Tom Fornelli didn’t just question the Tigers—they flat-out declared the dynasty over. Fornelli went so far as to say, “Clemson is dead. It’s dead. It’s not coming back.”

According to them, Tiger fans are just fooling themselves if they believe a resurgence is coming as 2026 approaches. Fornelli doubled down, insisting Clemson’s days as a college football powerhouse are finished, all because of what he calls a fundamental shift in the program’s direction.

The Talent Drain and the 2026 Draft Fallout

Here’s the kicker: what should be a point of pride—the 2026 NFL Draft, where nine Tigers heard their names called—is being spun as a negative. Fornelli called it “terrible news,” claiming Clemson isn’t reloading with the same caliber of recruits. He says the Tigers underachieved last year even with all that NFL talent, and now the pipeline is running dry.

“The talent is gone. They don’t have the same kind of players that they have had all these years,” Fornelli said.

Looking ahead, Fornelli points out only two Tigers are in the top 100 for the 2027 draft. He claims the blue-chip depth that made Clemson a playoff fixture is gone, and the recruiting rankings back him up. According to the critics, the cupboard is bare. But if you’ve followed this program, you know Clemson’s been doubted before.

A "Fingers Crossed" Quarterback Situation

Kanell didn’t hold back on the offense either, zeroing in on the quarterback room and the coaching staff. He called it a “fingers crossed” situation, with all eyes on sophomore Christopher Vizzina to finally deliver on his five-star promise.

But now, word is Vizzina’s already feeling the heat from true freshman Tait Reynolds. Kanell says that’s not what you want to hear if you’re chasing championships. He also threw shade at Chad Morris returning to the staff, calling it a shakeup that hasn’t exactly fired up the fanbase. The doubters are circling, but this is Clemson—pressure is nothing new in Death Valley.

The End of Dabo’s "Lifetime Deal"

But the hottest take of all? The idea that Dabo Swinney’s seat is getting warm. After a 7-6 season—the worst since 2010—the analysts questioned whether Dabo’s legendary status still shields him from the pressure cooker of modern college football. Fornelli said he wouldn’t rule out anything, even for a coach with two national titles.

“I would never say never at this point with any coach,” Fornelli said when asked if Dabo was still untouchable. He suggested that if the Tigers struggle to reach a bowl game again in 2026, the administration will have to ask a difficult question: “If you’re not going to adapt to what we need to do to keep doing what you already have accomplished, we need to find somebody who is.”

If Clemson stumbles again in 2026, he says the administration will have to make a tough call: adapt or move on. Kanell agreed, warning that another seven-win season would make things “so uncomfortable” in Tiger Town. It’s a bold claim, but if there’s one thing Dabo and Clemson have always done, it’s prove the doubters wrong.
