Dabo Swinney getting increasingly combative with the media is a sign of the times. Swinney has been an institution at Clemson for two decades now, but the game is changing fast, and he is struggling to keep up with it. This, in turn, caused him to lash out at a reporter on Tuesday, calling Chapel Fowler of The State a "gotcha guy" for asking if he had any regrets over his decisions with roster construction.
"I regret being 0-1 right now," Swinney said. "Can you ask me that at the end of the season? The season ain't over. We got one game, we got 11 more. What if we go 11-1? You promise me you'll ask me that then?"
While that response to Fowler's question may have been fair, Swinney then made it personal with him.
"I'm not answering questions like that. I know that's your role, and that's in this environment to be the guy that wants to create all the controversy. If that's who you are, that's fine. I get it,' Swinney said. "Did you play football? They give you 12 games. At the end of the year, you count them up. That's when those type of questions are fair to me. Not after one game to maybe the best team in the country."

Dabo Swinney gave Clemson its equivalent of a Mike Gundy soundbite
We have seen it before, and we will see it again. Soundbites like these are often a coach's undoing. Whether it be Jim Mora's "Playoffs? You kiddin' me?!" or the late Dennis Green's "They are who we thought they were!" rants, it usually doesn't end well for coaches after getting too off the cuff with the media. The last time we saw a head coach fall out of favor this quickly with the media was Mike Gundy.
While his "I'm a man, I'm 40!" rant came in the early days of his career, Gundy defending Ollie Gordon II's DUI, and then talking about getting head-butted by one of his cattle a few weeks later showed he lost the plot somewhere in the 2023 Big 12 Championship Game. Gundy got fired by his alma mater less than a month into the 2025 season. Like Swinney, he was a legend at his school right up until he wasn't.
Swinney is right that Fowler has a job to do, but so does Swinney. The Clemson head coach is in the business of winning games, while Fowler is tasked with covering Clemson athletics professionally. Although Fowler got chastised for asking a non-softball question, Swinney wouldn't be put into that position if Clemson didn't lose on the road by 41 points to LSU. He put his team into an awful spot.
Look. It is not like anyone inside the Clemson family wants to see Swinney fail. However, they have grown sick and tired of being gaslit by their head coach at every turn. Hiring his friend Chad Morris to be his offensive coordinator and not upgrading at quarterback by way of the transfer portal landed poorly with the fanbase. Swinney may use the portal these days, but he should be used to it by now.
The big question now is if Swinney would have been less condescending had Fowler played football.
