While it has been known for a while that Clemson will host Virginia Tech under the bright lights in Week 8, it was going to be interesting to see what the bookmakers thought of this game. Clemson improved to 4-2 (2-1) on the season after shutting out Charleston Southern on Saturday, while Virginia Tech stopped the bleeding by getting an ACC win over Georgia Tech to improve to 5-2 (2-2).
According to the FanDuel Sportsbook, Clemson will be laying 2.5 points to visiting Virginia Tech on Saturday night. The associated moneylines coming in are Clemson -134 and Virginia Tech +112. This means you would need to wager $134 on Clemson to win $100. As for Virginia Tech, a $100 bet would pocket you $112. The over/under comes in at 49.5 total points. Look for this game to be low scoring.
What the odds tell us is these two teams are evenly matched. However, the home crowd and it being a night game does give Clemson the slight advantage. If this game was being played in Blacksburg, it might give the Hokies more than a field goal chance at a victory. Clearly, these are two teams in the middle of the pack of an up-for-grabs ACC. Miami and Wake Forest have separated, but who is No. 3?
Clemson and Virginia Tech are jockeying for position to see if Wake Forest could slip up once again.
Clemson's Week 8 kickoff against Virginia Tech will be season-defining
With Miami in the driver's seat to get to Charlotte and Wake Forest wanting a rematch more than anything, it remains to be seen who will punch that other ticket to the ACC Championship Game beyond that of Miami. Simply put, Clemson has to win its five remaining ACC games to have a realistic shot at it. As for the Hokies, they would need the tiebreaker over the Tigers to even have a chance.
It is why every ACC game the rest of the way matters so much. Just getting to the ACC title bout could be that little sliver of hope someone could need to do the unthinkable versus Miami. While Wake Forest gave Miami a valiant effort, Clemson lost control of that game right away. Virginia Tech will not face their rival until later on this season. A shot at redemption is all that anyone really wants.
Although the ACC will likely be a one-team conference again this season, do not tell that to teams like Clemson or Virginia Tech who are still fighting for their chances of getting to Charlotte. Because these are two of the biggest brands in the conference, it is only fitting that it be played under the bright lights of Death Valley. With it expected to go down to the wire, emotions will be high in this one.
In a way, how Clemson plays Virginia Tech to kick off the second half may define the Tigers' season.
