For the third time in four years, Clemson softball is headed to the Super Regional.
In the Clemson Regional over the weekend, the Tigers swept through their field, earning yet another trip to the Super Regional under John Rittman. Clemson beat SC Upstate 10-2 on Friday, Northwestern 1-0 on Saturday, and then Kentucky 5-1 on Sunday to sweep the field and head to a third Super Regional in program history.
While three Super Regional appearances in program history may not seem like a huge accomplishment, it is when you consider Clemson softball has only been a Division 1 varsity sport since 2020. Rittman has done a great job with the program since its inaugural season.
The last time the Tigers made the Super Regional (2023), eventual national champion Oklahoma beat Clemson in two games. Clemson beat Auburn to make the Super Regionals. Before that (2022), Clemson lost to Oklahoma State in two games.
Finally making the Women's College World Series isn't going to be any easier this time around as the Tigers will be tasked with facing No. 6 Texas in the Super Regional.
The Longhorns cruised through their Austin Regional, beating Eastern Illinois 10-2, and then Michigan 16-4, before shutting UCF out 9-0 to advance to the Super Regional.
This Clemson vs. Texas matchup is going to be one of the most anticipated in the Super Regional round as the Longhorns are 49-10 after a Regional sweep and the Tigers are 47-12.
Rittman, a likely national coach of the year candidate, will have his hands full if he wants to reach the first Women's College World Series in Clemson softball history. But this team is special.
The Super Regionals will take place from May 22-25.
