Will Heldt’s decision wasn’t rushed. It was prayed over, discussed, and weighed carefully.
In the end, the answer led him right back to Clemson.
“I’ve been pondering it for the last few weeks, praying, talking to family, talking to staff and teammates,” Heldt said. “I just felt it was best for my future.”
Heldt confirmed his choice came down to two paths: the NFL or another year in orange.
“It was either declare or come back here,” he said. “I felt it was best for me to stay here and continue to develop myself.”
Now, with several defensive line veterans opting out, Heldt becomes one of the most experienced voices up front — a role he’s embraced during bowl preparation.
“Between me and Kaden Dent, we’re probably the two most experienced guys,” Heldt said. “Guys can lean on us if they’re not seeing something.”
He also highlighted younger linemen who have caught his attention during bowl practices.
“Darren Mayo has been coming along really well,” Heldt said. “And Champ Thompson — those are guys you can look for.”
Heldt knows Penn State well, having faced the Nittany Lions last season at Purdue — a familiarity that informs his expectations.
“They’re great up front,” Heldt said. “Hard-nosed team, dynamic offense.”
As for why Clemson remains the place he wants to be — even after a season that didn’t meet expectations — Heldt’s belief hasn’t wavered.
“Look at the track record,” he said. “Coach Swinney wins championships. It’s what he does.”
