DUI charges against Clemson tight end Ian Schieffelin have been dismissed.
Schieffelin released a statement on Tuesday morning saying that “after the evidence was reviewed,” Clemson police dropped the charges, and he accepted a reckless driving ticket.
Schieffelin confirmed that he will be suspended for Clemson’s Saturday home opener against LSU.
I am determined to learn from this experience and move forward with renewed focus,” Schieffelin said. “I fully understand the responsibility that comes with being a student-athlete at Clemson, and I remain committed to conducting myself in a manner that reflects positively on the university, my teammates, the athletic department, and myself.”
Schieffelin was arrested early on Aug. 17 for suspicion of DUI after an officer observed the football player rapidly driving and swerving over a double yellow line near campus. Schieffelin didn’t take a breathalyzer test and was arrested. He was released on bond later that morning.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney released a statement later that day, saying Schieffelin would miss some playing time.
“I have learned a valuable lesson from this experience and my commitment is to grow from this, and to represent Clemson with the integrity and character it deserves,” Schieffelin added in his statement.
Schieffelin is in his first season with the football program after playing four years for Brad Brownell’s men’s basketball team. He decided to use his fifth year to play football and joined the team in the spring.
During his basketball career, Schieffelin played in 134 games, scored over 1,000 points, and helped the Tigers reach two NCAA tournaments, including an Elite Eight appearance.
No. 4 Clemson takes on No. 9 LSU at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Swinney will address the media later this morning and could have more on Schieffelien’s playing status moving forward.
