Clemson news roundup: Men's soccer to Sweet 16, basketball action heats up, more

It was another busy weekend for Clemson athletics so let's take a look at the top stories from around the athletic department.

Clemson men's soccer advances to Sweet 16

Sunday, the Clemson men's soccer team began its quest for a national title by hosting Providence in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Behind a pair of goals from Wahabu Musah, the Tigers handled their business 2-0 to advance to the Sweet 16.

After controlling play for most of the first half, the Tigers got on the board in the 43rd minute when Musah sent a header into the net for his fifth goal of the season. That was one of six shots that Clemson had in the first 45 minutes of play.

In the second half, Musah scored off of a rebound in the 78th minute to double the lead. In all, the Tigers out-shot Providence 17-2 in the game.

The win sets up a rematch of the ACC Tournament Championship game against No. 8 national seed Wake Forest in Winston Salem North Carolina. The date and time of that match have yet to be announced by the NCAA.

Clemson men's basketball takes on San Francisco

Today, the Clemson men's basketbal team will take on the San Francisco Dons in an intriguing non-conference matchup. Both teams enter the game, which is part of the Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach, Florida, at 4-1 overall.

The winner of this game will advance to the event championship to face either Penn State or Fordham. The game tips at 6:30 p.m. Eastern and will be aired on CBS Sports Network.

Clemson women's basketball also in action on Monday

Coming off of their first loss of the season, the Clemson women's basketball team will also take to the court today in a multi-team event. Participating in the Emerald Coast Classic in Destin, Florida, the Tigers will take on UAB at noon Eastern.

Monday's game can be streamed on FloCollege.com for a fee. Tuesday, the Tigers will complete their time in Destin when they face either Alabama or Alabama State.

Clemson volleyball drops a pair of matches in Florida

Over the weekend, the Clemson volleyball team dropped road matches against Miami and Florida State as its ACC struggles continue. The Tigers are now just 10-19 overall and 2-16 in conference play.

On Friday, the Tigers were swept by the Hurricanes 3-0. Senior Azyah Dailey played well finishing with 10.5 points behind nine kills and three block assists in the loss.

Sunday, the Tigers fought valiantly in a five-set loss at Florida State. Sophomore Kate Hansen tallied a career-high 11 kills with four solo blocks, two assists, and two aces, while Dailey had a team-high 19 points.

The two teams alternated winning the first four sets with Clemson taking the first and third. However, in the decisive final set, the Seminoles prevailed 15-10 to pick up the win.

Clemson now turns its attention to a road game at Boston College on Wednesday. Back on November 15, the Tigers took down the Eagles 3-2 at home for one of their two conference wins thus far so they should be confident that they can get win No. 3 in Chestnut Hill.

Clemson football makes significant jump in national polls

Finally, the Clemson football team jumped as many as five spots in the national polls to sit at No. 12 in both the Associated Press and the AFCA Coaches Poll. The Tigers had the second-largest gain of any team in the A.P. poll behind the seven spots that No. 14 Arizona State climbed. Iowa State also jumped five spots in the A.P. poll.

Of course, what matters most will be where the Tigers find themselves in the College Football Playoff rankings, which will be announced on Tuesday night. Still, the fact that Dabo Swinney's team has jumped into the top 12 of the national polls is an encouraging sign ahead of that all-important reveal.
