With the first College Football Playoff rankings coming out and college basketball season underway, it is a perfect time for a midweek Clemson sports roundup! While the football team is going to need a miracle to even get Charlotte at 5-3 (3-2), we did see Brad Brownell and Shawn Poppie's basketball teams win in their respective home openers over the Stetson Hatters and the Radford Highlanders.
Graham Neff should be proud of the athletic department he is overseeing. The football team is one win away from achieving bowl eligibility for yet another season, dating back to 1999. Only Georgia, Ohio State, and Oklahoma have done that over the same span. As for the hoops side of things, Brownell is trying to make the tournament for the fourth year in a row, and Poppie is back-to-back.
Let us start with a popular playing hanging up the spikes for good before really getting into this.
Armon Mason has medically retired from playing football for Clemson
It all ends for us at some point. On Monday, the dream of playing football for Clemson ended for Armon Mason. The sixth-year defensive end has opted to medically retire from football. His head coach reflected on this decision. "Honestly, we didn't think he'd play again ... But he wanted to try ... He's truly an amazing kid." Mason's injury flared up after two games, and he was constantly in pain.
Mason took to Instagram on Monday to announce his decision to hang up the spikes for good at Clemson. "Recently, I had to make one of the harder decisions in my life to medically retire from football,” Mason wrote. “A lot of ups and downs, specifically the last almost three years with my playing health. I convinced myself I could outrun it, but my body and mind finally caught up to me.”
Mason leaves Clemson with seven tackles, two for a loss of yardage over 16 career games played.

Dillon Hunter has been dismissed by from Wheeler v. NCAA in Texas
The Dillon Hunter eligibility saga has taken yet another turn. After dismissing himself from the Godfrey v. NCAA case in Georgia, Hunter and the other plaintiffs from Georgia and Tennessee have been dismissed from the Wheeler v. NCAA case in Texas, citing a "lack of personal jurisdiction. This was the case former Clemson player RJ Godfrey attached himself to after dismissing himself as well.
What this means is that Hunter, Godfrey, and the rest of the plaintiffs from Georgia and Tennessee will have to find another court case to grant them injunctions to become eligible once again. Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said after Monday night's win over Stetson that "he believes there's no deadline to file a roster to [the] ACC/NCAA, with or without Hunter on it." Hunter is still not eligible.
Look for Hunter, Brownell, and the rest of the Clemson basketball team to fight for his right to play.

Clemson men's soccer team begins its run through the ACC Tournament
On Wednesday night, the Clemson men's soccer team will begin ACC Tournament play. Clemson is the No. 3 team in the nation, but will commence its run through the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the ACC. This is because the No. 2 SMU Mustangs also play in the conference. Clemson is 12-2-2 on the year, while SMU is 12-0-3, ranked only behind Georgetown. Maybe they will meet in the title bout?
The No. 2-seeded Tigers will host the No. 15-seeded Duke Blue Devils at Historic Riggs Field on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m. ET. If Clemson beats Duke, it will then host the winner of No. 7 North Carolina versus No. 10 Cal on Sunday in the quarterfinals. If Clemson keeps winning, the semifinals and ACC Championship will be held at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC.
With top-seeded SMU getting a bye to the quarterfinals, Clemson will have to play an extra game.
