The transfer portal is open for business, and you better believe Brad Brownell and the Tigers are already on the hunt. Clemson is wasting zero time, targeting one of the nation’s top playmakers to add some veteran savvy to a backcourt loaded with young firepower.

Central Connecticut’s Jay Rodgers has confirmed to League Ready that Clemson is in the mix, and that’s music to Tiger fans’ ears. Sure, he’s got plenty of suitors—Florida Atlantic, Penn State, USC, Butler—but let’s be honest, none of those programs can match what’s building in Tigertown right now.

The Ultimate Facilitator

If you like "pure" point guards, Jay Rodgers is exactly what the doctor ordered. He handed out 6.8 assists per game last season, ranking eighth in the nation, and while he can get his own shot (11.0 points per game), it’s his floor general instincts that have Clemson’s coaches dialing him up. Features explosive bucket-getters like Ace Buckner and Zac Foster, plus incoming freshmen Harris Reynolds and Amare James, Rodgers is the missing piece of the puzzle. He is the quintessential "coach on the floor" who can navigate ACC defenses and find the open man.

The Veteran Blueprint

Brownell has a proven track record of finding mid-major gems and polished veterans who thrive in his system. Last year, it was Middle Tennessee State transfer Jestin Porter who made the jump to the Power Four level; Rodgers fits that same reliable archetype.

A native of Pickerington, Ohio, Rodgers is a "medical redshirt" veteran who has battled through lower-body injuries earlier in his career. However, he proved his durability and high ceiling by playing at full strength throughout the 2025-26 season. As a Top-50 point guard in the portal, his experience—dating back to his start at New Orleans in 2020-21—would provide the steady hand Clemson needs for a deep March run.

While no official visit has been scheduled yet, the Tigers are firmly in the mix for a player who could turn a good backcourt into a great one.
