The Clemson Tigers backfield could look different this fall, and a transfer option is now in town.
SMU running back Chris Johnson Jr. is visiting Clemson on Saturday. The redshirt sophomore would have two years of eligibility remaining and would be at his third program in four seasons.
Johnson, a former Miami transfer, totaled 659 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns for the SMU Mustangs in 2025. His speed also showed up on special teams, where he handled three kickoff returns — an area that could add value in Clemson’s evaluation.
Clemson is familiar with Johnson’s skill set. He stood out against the Tigers during SMU’s Oct. 18 win, finishing with 99 total yards and a rushing touchdown.
Johnson entered the transfer portal Jan. 5 and is also planning a visit to UCF, with additional stops possible. On3 rates him as a three-star transfer prospect.
While Clemson is not facing an urgent need at running back, the room has openings. Starter Adam Randall has departed, and Keith Adams Jr. has entered the portal. That leaves Gideon Davidson and David Eziomume as early contenders for carries entering the offseason.
Head coach Dabo Swinney did not sign a running back in the most recent high school class, making a transfer addition a logical avenue to bolster competition and depth.
Johnson was a highly regarded recruit out of high school, earning four-star status and ranking among the top running backs in his class. Clemson’s transfer activity to this point has focused exclusively on defense, with eight additions aimed at strengthening Tom Allen’s unit.
Offensively, Clemson returns experience at wide receiver and tight end. Running back remains the most fluid position group — one that could be reshaped if Johnson’s visit leads to a commitment.
