Clemson’s defensive plans were thrown into a sudden tailspin in January. Then the Tigers were placed in a difficult position when linebacker Luke Ferrelli, who already registered for classes, reversed his commitment and resigned to go to Ole Miss.
The late start ended up leaving staff unable to find a replacement in the transfer portal, creating a vacancy with Wade Woodaz and Jamal Anderson Jr. having left the institution. It was a tough decision, but the "Ferrelli effect" is finally being felt though not every which way.
Even though, the departure of a contributor and the lack of Sammy Brown (wrist) could have bogged down their momentum in the unit’s spring, defensive coordinator Tom Allen said Monday that the forced reshuffling has had a welcome burst of competition in a much needed season.
"I am excited. It feels a lot easier after four days,” Allen added. "Why that is? Just because I think there are a bunch of hungry guys in there with anything to prove, and who need to take that next big step.”
And the scenario is a marked difference from last season. Allen said the deal had deepened and left him with serious feelings last spring that they weren’t deep enough to play at the second level, and what felt like a “last-minute crisis for us,” came to a head as the season wore on. This year, the absence of a “safe” depth chart is pushing younger players into high leverage repetitions they otherwise wouldn't see until August.
“Obviously, Sammy is a special, special player, but we need to have a lot of other guys to step up,” Allen said. "I can picture us being a deep set of guys, with a lot more guys coming over to play than we had a year ago, so that excites me.".
The other focus for the rest of the spring will be technical refinement — running fits and pass drops — but the main takeaway is the fact that the room is no longer a liability.
“There will be competition at each position,” Allen said. “That could be the most significant difference....”.
Though Ferrelli’s departure “almost messed that up,” the new “next man up” mentality has turned a possible roster crisis into, according to Allen, one of the team’s biggest strengths when 2026 starts.
