Clemson's CFP chances have taken a drastic turn for the worse after only one week

It only took one week for Clemson's decent College Football Playoff chances to wither up and die. Clemson entered the 2026-27 college football season with a respectable 21-percentage chance of making the playoffs, per ESPN's Football Power Index. After getting its clock cleaned by the LSU Tigers last Saturday, that number now has Clemson's chances of getting in firmly on life support.

Heading into Week 2, Clemson only has a 2.7 percent chance of making the playoffs, per the FPI. That mark has the Tigers in the same neighborhood as Illinois (2.9), UNLV (2.8), Nevada (2.7), and Southern Miss (2.7). Only Wake Forest (2.2), Syracuse (1.9), Florida State (1.3), Georgia Tech (1.0), North Carolina State (0.2), California (0.1), Stanford (0.0), and Boston College (0.0) have worse chances in the ACC.

While this oddly enough puts Clemson in the middle of the pack in the ACC with the ninth-best odds to make it, this was a team pushing for 25 percent inclusion at the start of the year. Although no one is a lock at this time, any team with a 50-percent chance or better stands a great chance of making the field. It just goes to show that Clemson is no longer seriously playing for a national championship.

Clemson now on life support to potentially make College Football Playoff

If we wanted to go deeper into what the FPI may tell us about this team, here are some more delicious nuggets to digest. The FPI has Clemson winning between 6.0 and 6.1 games. Thus, the chances of the Tigers becoming bowl-eligible are essentially a coin flip at 59.6 percent. Technically, they have a 1.3-percent chance to win the ACC, as well as a 0.1-percent shot at playing in the national title game.

Right now, with it being such a small sample size, there seem to be three factors dragging Clemson down in all this. The first is Clemson not having that great a chance to begin with. While 21.1 is a decent percentage, that is good enough to leave you out of the playoffs every year. The second has to do with how bad it looked at LSU in its 41-point loss. The third is the LSU head-to-head tiebreaker.

In short, if push comes to shove and both teams that call Death Valley home are vying for one last spot in the playoff field, LSU would win any head-to-head argument going away. While the College Football Playoff Selection Committee will allow teams to get better as the season goes along, having an early-season blemish this ghastly will be insanely difficult for Clemson to overcome going forward.

At this time, the best, and honestly the only, path forward for Clemson is to go 7-1 in ACC play and somehow get to Charlotte. If the Tigers are victorious in their rematch with Miami, or beat whoever else they may face at Bank of America Stadium, that would be good enough to get them into the 12-team field. We can thank Duke for taking it on the chin last year at 7-5 to allow Clemson a pathway in.

If there was any margin for error when it came to Clemson making the playoffs, it went away at LSU.
