The sting from Clemson’s tough 2026 baseball season isn’t fading anytime soon, and now it’s hitting even harder as summer arrives. With the NCAA transfer portal about to swing open on June 1, the Tigers are set to lose one of their biggest bats—and that’s a gut punch for every Clemson fan hoping for a quick turnaround.

Sophomore catcher and outfielder Nate Savoie, one of the Tigers’ brightest stars, is expected to hit the transfer portal, according to College Baseball Central’s Andrew Riedell. Losing Savoie is a major blow for a Clemson lineup desperate to reload with power heading into 2027.

A Major Bright Spot in a Difficult Season

When Savoie showed up in Tigertown last offseason, the hype was real—and he lived up to every bit of it. While the Tigers battled through a rocky spring and heartbreakingly missed the NCAA Tournament, Savoie was the steady force in the heart of the order that fans could count on game after game.

His monster 2026 season didn’t just earn him All-ACC honors—it put him all over the Clemson record books and gave Tiger fans something to cheer about in a tough year:

  • Batting Average: Hit a stellar .329 across the campaign.
  • Power Production: Crushed 16 home runs (second on the team) and added 13 doubles.
  • Run Production: Drove in a team-leading 52 RBIs while pacing the Tigers with a commanding .596 slugging percentage.

Even with a brief cold stretch to close out the regular season, Savoie’s big bat and ability to shine both in right field and behind the plate made him one of the most exciting sophomore talents anywhere in the ACC.

From West Coast Freshman Phenom to ACC Star

Savoie’s rise to ACC stardom was no fluke. Before he ever pulled on the Clemson orange, the Newport Beach, California product was already making waves with a record-setting freshman year at Loyola Marymount (LMU) in 2025.

During that debut collegiate campaign under Donegal Fergus, Savoie exploded onto the national radar:

  • Blasted 20 home runs and drove in 61 RBIs with a .300 batting average.
  • Commanded WCC Freshman of the Year honors.
  • Earned consensus Freshman All-American recognition as both an outfielder and a catcher.

Bakich Forced to Rebuild Through the Portal

Savoie’s exit is just the latest domino to fall as the June 1 portal window opens up. The Tigers have already watched lefty Noah Samol and veteran infielder Jay Dillard decide to look for new homes, adding to the challenge facing this Clemson squad.

Throw in the recent decommitment of switch-hitting JUCO star Colin Guerra, and Coach Bakich suddenly has a massive puzzle to solve this summer. The baseball staff will need to attack the transfer market with everything they’ve got if Clemson is going to reload and make a real run at redemption in 2027.
