Clemson's ACC scheduling quirk for 2027 football season is not some lucky break at all

For the second season in a row, Clemson will only be playing eight conference games after the ACC adopted a nine-game schedule. While the Tigers were one of five teams playing only eight this year due to pre-existing non-conference games (à la LSU), they drew the "lucky straw" for 2027 as next season's odd man out. This is par for the course for as long as the ACC only has 17 football teams.

However, this scheduling quirk is not as fortuitous as one might think. Per league rules, the ACC has mandated that each team must play a minimum of 10 Power Four opponents annually. While Clemson has a permanent rival in the SEC in South Carolina, the Tigers will also host Notre Dame at Death Valley on Oct. 30, 2027. With those two having been playoff-caliber teams recently, it is not an easy draw at all.

Here is a look at who Clemson's 2027 conference opponents will be for next year's college season.

• Home: Boston College Eagles, Florida State Seminoles, Stanford Cardinal, Wake Forest Demon Deacons
• Away: Louisville Cardinals, North Carolina State Wolfpack, SMU Mustangs, Virginia Tech Hokies

Clemson will not have any time to breath after Week 2 next CFB season

As it stands now, Clemson will host Georgia State (Aug. 28), Wofford (Sept. 11), and Notre Dame (Oct. 3), in addition to playing South Carolina on the road in Columbia (Nov. 27). While the locations and opponents on Clemson's 2027 ACC schedule have been decided, the dates have not. Once we get past the second week of the season, Clemson will only be playing Power Four teams the rest of the way.

Although so much can change between now and the start of next season, Clemson is effectively swapping out LSU for Notre Dame, Syracuse for Boston College, Cal for Stanford, Duke for Wake Forest, and North Carolina for North Carolina State. While it keeps Florida State and Virginia Tech, Louisville and SMU will replace Miami and Georgia Tech in some capacities. The schedule got harder!

Even if the Tigers only play eight conference games, they will have to claw and scratch their way from Week 3 on. Facing only Power Four competition from the middle of September on could leave next year's team exposed. Conversely, and honestly preferably, maybe this daunting schedule lights a fire in this team like Chad Morris was hoping for? Either way, Clemson did not catch a lucky break at all.

If there is any additional good news from this 2027 ACC football opponents release, besides the fact that Clemson is only playing eight conference foes, it would be that there are far more pelts on the wall to be had from this gauntlet. Look for Louisville, Notre Dame, and SMU to be top-25 teams again. Perhaps Virginia Tech gets there in Year 2 under James Franklin? South Carolina could be good, too.

In the end, Clemson being the only team to get eight ACC games next season seems more than fair. Other teams in the ACC will be playing Notre Dame, but most do not have an annual opponent out of the SEC either. Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Louisville do, but so does Clemson. While it all does even itself out in the end, Clemson's unique 2027 scheduling quirk does not provide any real relief.

The only way this schedule improves next year is by way of Clemson getting better across the board.
