Here we go, Tiger fans. Dabo is gearing up for his 18th full season at the helm, and the national spotlight is burning bright. Sure, everyone’s talking about that monster opener at LSU, but CBS Sports has their eyes on something even bigger: a cross-country trek that will see our Tigers travel 2,596 miles to take on Cal in Berkeley. Mark it down—this is the one that could define the season.
This isn’t your average away game. When Clemson touches down in Berkeley for that Friday night showdown on September 25, it’ll be the first time ever our Tigers have set foot in the Bay Area to battle Cal. Outside of a long-ago Citrus Bowl, these teams barely know each other, but make no mistake—the stakes for this first-ever ACC clash are sky-high.
A HISTORIC FLIGHT TO THE BAY
Just think about the grind. After braving the heat and noise of Baton Rouge, then defending The Valley against Georgia Southern and North Carolina, our Tigers have to pack up and fly all the way across the country for their first ACC road test. That’s a challenge only Clemson is built to handle.
CBS Sports analyst Austin Nivison isn't underestimating the challenge posed by first-year coach Tosh Lupoi and his squad. As Nivison explained:
"(T)he Tigers will make the 2,596-mile trip to Berkeley in Week 4. Clemson will have its hands full against sophomore quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who lit up the ACC for 3,454 yards as a true freshman. Overall last season, the Tigers' defense was pretty good, but it gave up big numbers against better offenses. If Dabo Swinney and his squad slip up against the Golden Bears, they'll be limping into a matchup against Miami."
THE SAGAPOLUTELE THREAT AND THE MIAMI GAUNTLET
The big storyline? All eyes are on Cal’s gunslinger, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who lit up the league as a freshman. But this is Clemson we’re talking about. Our defense, ranked No. 22 by CBS after spring ball, knows this is about more than just a W—it’s about setting the tone for the whole season.
If the Tigers stumble under those California lights, there’s no time to lick our wounds. Miami, ranked No. 8 and loaded with talent, comes storming into Death Valley just a week later. The Hurricanes might be the ACC favorites, but they know Clemson is the roadblock standing in their way.
"The Hurricanes have five road games on their schedule, and they'll be heavy favorites in three of them. The road clash against Notre Dame, while very important, is a non-conference matchup. That leaves Clemson as a potential stumbling block in ACC play. Yes, the Tigers have taken a couple of steps backward in recent years, but they should still be in the mix for a conference championship berth this fall."
THE GRIND OF THE 2026 SLATE
That trip to Berkeley? It’s just the start. This schedule is a gauntlet, with five true road games that’ll test every ounce of grit we’ve got. After Miami and a quick breather against Charleston Southern, the Tigers head to Tallahassee for a Halloween showdown with Florida State. No rest for the wicked—or for champions.
And the finish? It’s a grind, with trips to Syracuse and Duke wrapped around a home battle with Georgia Tech, all building to the Palmetto Bowl against the Gamecocks on November 28. But make no mistake—everyone says the real heartbeat of this season is that Friday night in Berkeley. If our Tigers conquer the distance, they’ll conquer the season.
