Everything ends, good, bad, and downright ugly. While Deshaun Watson was a marvelous player for the Clemson Tigers back in the day, the last several years of his NFL career have been nothing short of a disaster. His controversial trade from the Houston Texans to the Cleveland Browns has only been amplified by his poor play, bad attitude, and awful injury history. Browns fans have had enough of him.
When Watson was booed relentlessly during Cleveland's second preseason game of the summer vs. Buffalo, he took great umbrage to that. Blissfully unaware that he completed only 5-of-12 passes for 36 yards and a pick, he failed to realize he is losing the battle for his right to play in the NFL. Cleveland fans are eager to see what second-year pro Shedeur Sanders can do. They are so done with Watson.
During the postgame press conference, Watson believed that the booing had "nothing to do about the performance." He believed it was "more personal than that" and that it was "a disrespectful thing." He went as far as to say the "last time I played on this field. I tore my Achilles. And that same fan base cheered when I got hurt," Watson said. Self-awareness is not a trait Watson ever seemed to grasp.

Conversely, Watson's new Browns head coach Todd Monken had no problem letting Watson have it. He did not defend the long underperforming quarterback he inherited in any way, shape, of form. “How does it feel to get booed? It sucks, I don’t want to get booed," Monken said. "But it comes with the territory, you don’t want to get booed, let’s play good football. Let’s play good at quarterback.”

Deshaun Watson is one step closer to being out of the NFL entirely
This is the harsh reality of the situation. Watson's trade to Cleveland will go down as the worst deal in NFL history. The Browns thought they were getting a franchise quarterback. Instead, they got a perpetual ice cream headache who has set their long-suffering franchise back even more so. Clearly, he doesn't want to be in Cleveland. Browns fans don't want him around. Sadly, is all about the money.
Watson is entering the final season of his five-year, $230 million fully-guaranteed contract. Through his first four years with the Browns, Watson is 9-10 in 19 starts. He did not play at all in 2021 while in between teams, nor did he play last season after tearing his ACL in 2024. Watson has never played in more than seven games in any season for the Browns. Four years for one season's worth of starts...
Now that he is on the wrong side of 30, we have to wonder if Watson will even play another down in the NFL. Cleveland still has to play him no matter what, but he is no longer capable of helping this team win. The fact that Monken was this quick to throw him under the bus shows that he has little to no friends left in the building. His former head coach Kevin Stefanski now leads the Atlanta Falcons.
Overall, Cleveland fans have already had to endure so much. While they have the great misfortune of having Jimmy Haslam serving as their owner, they can no longer stomach all the baggage and bad vibes Watson has put out. Even though he will forever be remembered for his greatness at Clemson and his first few years in the league with Houston, it impossible to separate him from this nonsense.
The second the Browns cut ties with Watson for good, it will be end of his NFL career as we know it.
