Bill Belichick is a man of few words. While the greatest head coach in NFL history has become a bit more loquacious since taking over at North Carolina, who could have foreseen him speaking so glowingly about Clemson ahead of the Week 3 matchup? Belichick shared his experiences from an NFL standpoint on what he thinks about Clemson. It was all positive about Dabo Swinney's program.
“Coach Swinney’s done a great job," Belichick said about Clemson during Monday morning's press conference. "I think he’s one of the guys who cares about the game, cares about his players, and doing the right thing.”
Although Belichick may have a great deal of respect for what Clemson was, it would not be surprising to see him destroy something that was once beautiful on Saturday afternoon.
FanDuel Sportsbook had Clemson laying 5.5 points initially, but the betting line has dropped to only 3.5 coming in. With Clemson starting a true freshman quarterback in Tait Reynolds versus UNC, Belichick has to be licking his chops right now. His Tar Heels team is led by its defense. While the offense and special teams have a way to go, Reynolds could be in for a rude awakening in Week 3.

Dabo Swinney must take Bill Belichick's Clemson praise with grain of salt
While Swinney could certainly embody the "Well, aww shucks!" attitude of hearing Belichick speak about his program this way, do not think for a second that UNC is not out for blood. The Heels are 2-0 on the year, including a somewhat impressive neutral-site victory over TCU in Dublin during Week 0. With a better grasp of the college game, look for Belichick to do what he does to new quarterbacks.
This is not to say Clemson can't win this game or won't win this game. However, these are the type of coaching situations Belichick lives for. He loves to catch a decadent head coach napping. Clemson may be 1-1 on the season, but its Week 2 showing against Georgia Southern was not as impressive as it honestly should have been. That's why Clemson has no choice but to put its best foot forward.
Even if Swinney is straddling both sides of the Clemson quarterbacking fence, Belichick could not care less. He has been calling defenses for about as long as Swinney has been alive. While Reynolds has played slightly better than Christopher Vizzina so far this season, Billy Edwards Jr. is a sixth-year senior with a boatload of starts going opposite of him. For better or worse, he is a total gunslinger.
Right now, we can choose to dissect what Belichick said in one of two ways. We can take everything at face value and be beholden to Swinney's past Clemson accomplishments. It may be the easier way of going about it, but that may not be the right course of action. Instead, we may want to view what Belichick said about Clemson's past accomplishments as a sign that he has no fear of this team at all.
If Clemson treats North Carolina like a cupcake opponent, the Tigers might not be going to a bowl.
