Biggest offseason storyline for each Clemson 2026 ACC opponent heading into fall camp

Winning one's Power Four league has never been more important. For the first time in the history of the College Football Playoff, every team who wins the ACC, the Big Ten, the Big 12, and the SEC is guaranteed a spot in the 12-team field. This came about after a 7-5 Duke team won the ACC a season ago... Of course, Clemson is one of the most serious contenders to potentially come out of its league.

Here is a look at who the Tigers will be playing this year, as well as their eight opponents in the ACC.

While some ACC teams will be playing eight league games and others will be playing nine, Clemson is still playing 10 Power Four teams anyway with LSU and South Carolina on the schedule out of the SEC. As far as the ACC is concerned, the Tigers will host North Carolina, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech. They will play Cal, Florida State, Syracuse, and Duke away from Death Valley this year.

Without further ado, here is the biggest offseason storyline for each of Clemson's ACC opponents.

North Carolina Tar Heels (Sept. 19: Clemson, SC)

Does North Carolina even have any shot of being successful under Bill Belichick this season?

Things have been so much better in Chapel Hill than they are right now. It might only be year two of the Bill Belichick era in North Carolina football, but he may not make it through the season. With GM Michael Lombardi on administrative leave, as well as the Tar Heels coming off a disastrous first year under this regime, we could see the plug being pulled before they get through their November slate.

California Golden Bears (Sept. 25: Berkeley, CA)

Tosh Lupoi comes over with big promise to get the most out of Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele

Cal is a very intriguing team coming in. The Golden Bears have been able to carve out a niche the last few years since coming over from the old Pac-12. Tosh Lupoi takes over his alma mater's program after having been Oregon's defensive coordinator. He inherited a promising quarterback in Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. Cal could sneak up on some people this year, but this duo has to drive the bus.

Miami Hurricanes (Oct. 3: Clemson, SC)

Darian Mensah takes over for Carson Beck in latest wave of transfer portal quarterbacking

Miami may have been the last team to make the College Football Playoff only a season ago, but the Hurricanes did play for a national championship. They came up short with Carson Beck under center, but ended up replacing him with former Duke star Darian Mensah in the transfer portal. Expectations are sky high in Coral Gables, as anything short of a deep playoff run shall be disappointing for The U.

Virginia Tech Hokies (Oct. 24: Clemson, SC)

How much better will James Franklin actually be leading Virginia Tech over Brent Pry?

The James Franklin of it all has found itself a new home. The former Penn State and Vanderbilt head coach has taken over at Virginia Tech. He brought with him a slew of former Nittany Lions, many of whom played so poorly in the first half of last season that he ended up being fired less than a year after a playoff run. The Hokies should be better, but Franklin shockingly kept Brent Pry on his VT staff.

Florida State Seminoles (Oct. 31, Tallahassee, FL)

Mike Norvell is cooked, but will he still even be around come Halloween for Florida State?

Nobody is sitting on a hotter seat in college football right now than Mike Norvell at Florida State. He needs to win around eight or so games to get another season in Tallahassee. Long gone are the days of when Jordan Travis was running around in the backfield for them at quarterback. The big question from a Clemson standpoint will be if Norvell is even coaching the Seminoles in the Halloween game.

Syracuse Orange (Nov. 7: Syracuse, NY)

What season was the anomaly for Fran Brown at Syracuse?: Was it 2024, or was it 2025?

It is so hard to peg what the Syracuse Orange will be about this season. Year one under Fran Brown two seasons ago was utterly fantastic. He looked like the next strong branch to stem off Kirby Smart's coaching tree. After Steve Angeli suffered his early-season injury, Syracuse devolved into being an ACC bottom-feeder. So what season was the anomaly for Brown?: 2024 or 2025? We will find out...

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (Nov. 14: Clemson, SC)

Massive offseason changes to the Georgia Tech offense could hold the Yellow Jackets back

With Haynes King turning pro, and Aaron Philo following Buster Faulkner to Florida, that ushered in even more changes for Georgia Tech on offense. Alberto Mendoza transferred away from Indiana to lead his own team. He will be playing for Yellow Jackets legend George Godsey on offense. Godsey was able to convince Clemson legend DeAndre Hopkins to come aboard and be a part of his staff.

Duke Blue Devils (Nov. 20: Durham, NC)

Is Duke here to stay atop the ACC, or is Manny Diaz looking for exit strategy to better gig?

Duke may be the reigning ACC Champions, but nobody gave the Blue Devils a first-place vote during ACC Media Days. Manny Diaz has proven to be one of the better coaches in the conference, but he has to break in yet another quarterback this year. With Darian Mensah off to Miami, in came former San Jose State star Walker Eget, who is still a bit banged up. Will Diaz thrive, or look for a better job?

Overall, Clemson's eight ACC opponents all have varying levels of major offseason storylines to be concerned about. In a way, Syracuse's are probably the least concerning. Brown is either the guy or he is not. As for teams like Cal and Virginia Tech on Clemson's schedule, there is so much unknown with Franklin and Lupoi taking over both programs. Regardless, Clemson needs to take advantage.

For now, Clemson has a tremendous opportunity to win seven or so games during conference play.
