Athlon Sports drops its 2026 ACC football predictions. Does Dabo have enough to prove the pundits wrong?

Is Clemson flying under the radar.

The computers might be buying into a Clemson bounce-back in 2026, but the so-called experts still aren’t ready to believe in the Tigers’ roar just yet.

Athlon Sports dropped its official ACC football predictions, and let’s just say college football insider Steven Lassan isn’t ready to hand Dabo Swinney back his crown atop the ACC just yet.

Instead, Athlon has Clemson slotted at fourth in the ACC, looking up at a new pecking order of so-called contenders.

The Projected ACC Hierarchy

Athlon is calling for a so-called historic showdown in Charlotte on December 5, with Miami taking down ACC newcomer SMU for the title. Here’s how Lassan stacks up the top of the league:

  1. Miami Hurricanes (Predicted ACC Champion)
  2. SMU Mustangs (Predicted ACC Runner-Up)
  3. Louisville Cardinals
  4. Clemson Tigers

The X-Factors: QB Development and Roster Overhauls

Athlon says Clemson’s fate—whether it’s a fourth-place finish or a run back to the top—comes down to a few high-stakes wild cards:

1. The Quarterback Conundrum

With Chad Morris back in town and the offense getting a full overhaul, it all rides on who takes the snaps. Will it be Christopher Vizzina or true freshman Tait Reynolds steering the ship? If Vizzina can spread the ball around with poise, the Tigers have the speedsters on the outside—Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore—and the power of Gideon Davidson in the backfield to light up the scoreboard like old times.

2. The Great Wall Rebuild

Even if the quarterback room settles in, the big question is up front. The Tigers have to reload in the trenches after losing three mainstays, so it’s up to Matt Luke to whip the young linemen into shape from day one.

3. Tom Allen’s Defensive Backbone

The defense, though, is where the Tigers can flex. Tom Allen steps in with a front seven that’s absolutely stacked, led by edge menace Will Heldt and tackling machine Sammy Brown. And don’t forget, Swinney went shopping in the portal and brought in SEC-caliber speed with Elliot Washington II and Jerome Carter III locking down the secondary.

Mapping the 2026 ACC Schedule

If Clemson wants to prove Athlon wrong, the schedule sets up nicely at home, but the Tigers will have to dodge some serious traps on the road.

If Morris can get the offense humming and the young quarterbacks dealing, Clemson’s defense has the bite to make this fourth-place prediction look downright silly by the time November rolls around.

“After last year’s underachieving 7-6 season, the ‘26 campaign is a crucial one for the overall direction for Clemson under coach Dabo Swinney. Sensing the urgency and need for a quick rebound, Swinney made a couple of staff changes, including hiring former play-caller Chad Morris to return as offensive coordinator. Also, the Tigers were more active in the portal than they were in previous years.” — Steven Lassan, Athlon Sports
