Clemson’s wide receiver tradition is making noise from coast to coast this summer, and you can feel it all the way out in Beaverton, Oregon. That’s where the nation’s top high school football prospects have come together to battle it out at The Opening Finals, and the Tigers’ presence is impossible to ignore.

With the whole country watching, five-star Clemson commit Jamarin Simmons showed exactly why he’s the next big thing in Tiger Town. He didn’t just show up—he took over. After putting on a show Thursday, Simmons was named the clear-cut "Alpha Dog" of Day 1 by 247Sports, leaving 120 of the nation’s best recruits in his dust.

Simmons might not be the biggest guy out there—just under 6 feet and 165 pounds—but he didn’t need size to embarrass defenders. The nation’s No. 26 overall prospect put on a clinic with his quick-twitch moves and razor-sharp routes during the one-on-ones, showing off the kind of skill set that Tiger fans have come to expect from their future stars.

The scouts couldn’t get enough of his smooth footwork and lightning-quick release off the line—classic traits of a future Clemson playmaker.

Evaluating his precise separation skills, 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins heavily praised the technical refinement of the future Tiger. Ivins noted, “While he might not have won every rep, the newly-minted five-star wide receiver put on a show during a lengthy 1-on-1 period with his dynamic route-running.

A sudden mover with an explosive lower half, Simmons used a variety of different releases to create early separation before charting his way up or across the field.”

Rivals was just as impressed, praising Simmons’ football IQ and slotting him right among the very best at the entire event.

Analyst Cody Bellaire observed, “He’s got such a good understanding of leverage in order to create natural space at the top of his routes and getting out of his breaks very comfortably.”

Simmons’ electric performance out west is exactly why Dabo Swinney and his staff made him their top priority, offering him a scholarship a year ago after he lit up camp in front of the coaches.

Simmons jumped on board with the Tigers in May, capping off a red-hot 16-day recruiting run that brought in 15 new commits. After torching defenses for 59 catches, 932 yards, and 14 touchdowns as a junior, Simmons is proving he’s got the kind of game-breaking ability that will keep Clemson’s passing attack as dangerous as ever.
