Prediction: North Carolina at Clemson Football

A few seasons ago, Sam Howell returned for his final season in Chapel Hill with a ton of hype. The season was a dud because there weren’t many difference makers returning around him.

I presumed this season for Drake Maye would be similar, but the Tar Heels have been a good football team. You can read more about some of the people who have stepped up for UNC in Casey’s preview, but this squad hasn’t flopped the same way as Howell’s 2021 group.

This will be strength vs strength when UNC’s offense takes the field against Clemson’s defense. The Tigers have played well the past two weeks against Notre Dame and Georgia Tech even though they have played several young and inexperienced guys, especially in the secondary. Those young players will be tested by Maye and Tez Walker.

As is often the case in a strength vs strength matchup, the deciding factor is often on the other side. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one decided by Clemson’s offense vs UNC’s defense.

The two squads have had mirror seasons. Clemson’s offense struggled most of the season until the past couple weeks. UNC’s defense earned praise for improving over last year’s disappointing group, only to regress as the season went on.

Clemson’s young defensive players have a bright future, but Maye could victimize them here.

I do like Clemson’s odds of running the ball effectively against the Tar Heels and keeping their offense off the field.

The game probably comes down to Cade Klubnik and the receivers. They will need Beaux Collins and Troy Stellato to be reliable and make some first down receptions. They will need Tyler Brown to make some big plays.

Offenses have had success against the Tar Heel defense lately, so I like the Tigers to be able to move the ball and find some points.

I think this game will be close. I like Clemson on the money line. The spread has moved a bit in the past day, and might move again. Current odds will update below. I like the Tigers by a touchdown. At time of writing, Clemson is favored by 7.5 points, so I would take UNC plus the points.

I don’t think they quite hit the over, but I do think there will be some scoring.

24. 838. 31. 879. Final
