Prediction: Georgia Tech at Clemson Football

I’ve taken a few jabs for my prediction that Notre Dame would beat Clemson by four touchdowns this past weekend. That’s it though. A few. As in “less than I can count on one hand”, because the vast majority of people didn’t think it was crazy before the game was played.

It was satisfying to be wrong. The defense played their hearts out, and Phil Mafah was a star.

Can they replicate that effort in the remaining games this season? That’s hard to gauge. There was a time when Clemson didn’t often fall prey to trap games, but this team doesn’t have the same mettle of teams from the late 2010s.

If Dabo Swinney’s post-Notre Dame message that a great performance will be easily forgotten if it is followed up by another lackluster performance has been delivered, then we will find out this weekend if his team has what it takes to turn a corner.

I lean towards this being a team that is still young and still growing their thick skin. It’s hard for a team to follow an emotional victory with another strong performance. I don’t expect a collapse. I just think replicating last Saturday will be a challenge.

I like the Clemson defense to play well in Death Valley. I also think Coach Swinney and the offensive staff will be smart enough to recognize the offensive line performed well when they simplified the playbook. I think Clemson sticks with that strategy.

I do think Georgia Tech is an improved team, and I think the program is moving in the right direction. Haynes King is having a good season. I’ve traditionally thought Sam Hartman was a good quarterback, but he wasn’t very good this past Saturday. I think it is reasonable to expect King to challenge the young Clemson secondary more this weekend than they were against the Irish.

This one should be close. I’ll take Clemson on the money line, Georgia Tech plus the points and the under on the total.

879. Final. 20. 880. 24
