Three Clemson Football defensive players were named to the 2023 Bronko Nagurski Award preseason watchlist.

Barrett Carter, Tyler Davis & Jeremiah Trotter are among the 94 defensive players who have been added to the watchlist. Players from all FBS conferences are represented.

The trophy is awarded annually to the best defensive college football player. The Football Writer’s Association of America vote on the winner. The award is presented in conjunction with the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

The trophy was first bestowed in 1993. Since then, there has been one winner from Clemson: Da’Quan Bowers in 2010. Other former winners include Chase Young from Ohio State, Aaron Donald from Pittsburgh, Luke Kuechly from Boston College, and Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska.

Carter, Davis, and Trotter join Will Shipley (Maxwell Award) and Dabo Swinney (Dodd Trophy) as Tigers on preseason watchlists for 2023.

Will Anderson from Alabama won the past two awards in 2021 and 2022. Alabama has won three Nagurski Trophies, followed by Arizona, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Northwestern, and Texas with two each.

Clemson Football tied Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State with three players each on the Nagurski watchlist

Other ACC players included are DeWayne Carter from Duke, Fentrell Cypress and Jared Verse from Florida State, Kam Kinchens from Miami, Cedric Gray from North Carolina, and Aydan White from North Carolina State.

Nick Emmanwori from South Carolina is the only other player from the Carolinas to be included.

Other notable names include Kool-Aid McKinstry, Dallas Turner and Malachi Moore from Alabama, Mykel Williams and Malaki Starks from Georgia, Tommy Eichenberg and JT Tuimoloau from Ohio State, and Jason Henderson from Old Dominion.

There are 13 defensive tackles, 16 defensive ends, 29 linebackers, 19 safeties, and 19 cornerbacks on the watchlist.

The list will be trimmed to finalists on November 15th and the winner will be announced on December 4th in Charlotte, North Carolina.
