Clemson Football has received another commitment for the 2024 cycle from defensive back Ashton Hampton.

Hampton is a 3-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He is 6′-2″ and 190 pounds. He is getting ready to start his senior season at Florida State University School in Tallahassee, Florida, which is a prep school run in cooperation with the university.

Hampton made official visits to Clemson, Florida, Louisville, Arkansas, Miami and Florida State. He had 21 total scholarship offers, including Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Ole Miss.

247Sports lists Hampton as a safety, but Rivals lists him as cornerback. As you will see in his Hudl highlights, he often lines up at corner in high school. He tends to jam the receiver at the line of scrimmage and play them very closely, rarely giving his opponent a cushion. He can also make tackles in the open field. No arm tackles for Hampton – he is technically sound.

Hampton also plays wide receiver for the Seminole offense. He is physical and strong on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Clemson Football commit Ashton Hampton is likely to rise in the recruiting rankings

After watching his highlights, I do wonder why he is only a 3-star in the Composite. He is a strong athlete, and will make a formidable safety. The only thing I can guess is that the level of competition he faces in high school might not be convincing to the scouts, though it could be visibility. None of the major recruiting websites have a solid scouting report on Hampton yet. That means he might be in line for a big bump in the ratings as his senior season progresses.

Hampton joins Ricardo Jones, Tavoy Feagin and Noah Dixon as defensive backfield prospects in Clemson’s 2024 Class. Hampton’s initial position at Clemson might depend on how the balance of this class plays out. Cornerback Corian Gipson has yet to announce his choice, presumably between Clemson and Texas. If Clemson adds Gipson as a corner, then Hampton might work more at safety.
