Texas Tech Red Raiders

The Texas Tech Red Raiders were founded in 1925. They were originally known as the Matadors before their current nickname was chosen in 1937.

Texas Tech played for many seasons in the Southwest Conference before it broke up in 1996. The Red Raiders joined the new Big 12 Conference and have played there ever since.

While the program has an all-time winning percentage above .500, they have a reputation for being a middle-of-the-pack program. There have been a few exceptions to that, most notably when the late Mike Leach led players like Michael Crabtree and Graham Harrell to a Big 12 South title and a huge primetime win over then No. 1 ranked Texas.

The only time in history that the Red Raiders crossed paths with Clemson was in 2002, and it didn’t go well for the Tigers at all. Leach was in his third season as the head coach in Lubbock when he led Tech into the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida against Tommy Bowden’s Tigers.

Texas Tech won 55-12, leaving Tiger fans depressed over a season where Clemson lost to every ranked team they faced.

As the two programs are not natural candidates for a continuing series, the Tigers have never had a chance to avenge the bowl loss.
