The much improved Clemson Women’s Basketball team fell short in the second round of the ACC Tournament Thursday evening against the North Carolina Tar Heels, losing by a score of 68-58.

The Tigers are now 17-15 on the season, with 7 more wins than last years club, including 4 more ACC wins, not including 1 in this tournament over Pittsburgh.

On Thursday, Clemson held only one brief 17 second lead, but battled to keep the game in single digits for the majority of the game.

Time and time again the Tigers were unable to substantially cut into the North Carolina lead with the Tar Hell lead going back and forth between the 7 and 10 point range.

The Tar Heels led by 5 at the end of the first quarter, 8 at the half and 7 headed into the final period.

Amari Robinson played well in the loss, scoring 27 points on 9 of 12 field goal shooting, including 2 of 4 from three point range and 7 of 7 from the line.

No other Tiger scored more than 7 points on the evening.

Hannah Hank fresh off a career night against Pittsburgh was held to just two points in 29 minutes of playing time, going 1 of 3 from the field, including 0 of 1 from three point range.

Ruby Whitehorn led Clemson with 8 boards.

The Tigers shot 41.2% on the night, but only hit 5 of 17 three point shots (29.4%).

Clemson committed 23 turnovers, which the Tar Heels turned into 18 points, which ultimately proved to be one of the key differences in the game.

The season may not be over for Clemson Women’s Basketball

Despite the loss the Tigers season may continue with a birth in the Women’s NIT Tournament and they could possibly even host a game.

Clemson is much improved over last season when the Tigers went 10-21 overall and 3-15 in the ACC, with two of those wins coming over Wake Forest.

There is still much work to do for the Tigers to compete in the ACC, but this was a marked improvement over the 2021-2022 edition.
