Clemson softball opens season by thumping FIU, 10-1
The Clemson softball team opened the 2023 season with a resounding win in their opening game of the FIU tournament by a score of 10-1 in a game called after 5 innings due to the run rule.
The Tigers started early, scoring four in the top of the first and two in the second to lead 6-0 after two innings and were on cruise control thereafter.
Clemson had 12 hits, including two each by 4 different Tigers: Valerie Cagle, Caroline Jacobsen, Ally Miklesh and Reedy Davenport.
Morgan Clark, Cagle, Jacobsen and Miklesh all hit home runs for the Tigers on the evening.
Three players, including Clark, Cagle and Miklesh also had 2 RBI apiece for Clemson.
Millie Thompson started the game in the circle for the Tigers, going three innings, giving up 3 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2, while surrendering a solo home run as the Panthers only run on the day.
Regan Spencer and Cagle followed Thompson with one shutout inning of relief work each.
The Tigers initial rally started with 1 out in the first after Maddie Moore was hit by a pitch. Cagle then doubled down the left field line scoring Moore and giving the Tigers the early lead.
After Jacobsen’s single put runners on first and third Alia Logoleo hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
RBI hits by Aby Vieira (double) and Miklesh (single) made it 4-0 Clemson before the top of the first inning was over.
Clemson softball won their opening game of the season in the FIU Tournament
Clemson takes on Georgia State at 3 p.m. today and Kansas City at 10 a.m. Saturday in their next two scheduled games in the tournament.
A second game is scheduled Saturday against a team and at a time to be determined depending on game outcomes will be followed by the final game of the tournament which is scheduled for Sunday to wrap up the tournament.
After a day off Monday, the Tigers are scheduled to visit Furman on Tuesday before hosting Northwestern and Ohio State next weekend in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
