Clemson Football: Final odds, best bet and prediction for Tigers vs Eagles

After an emotional couple of weeks against some of the ACC’s best competition, Clemson football travels north to the Boston area to take on the Boston College Eagles in another ACC Atlantic battle.

The Tigers took over right from the start of the second half last week in a not as close as it looks 10-point win over North Carolina State, while Boston College upset Louisville outright by a score of 34-33 as a 13.5-point underdog.

On the surface, this looks like a tough matchup for the Eagles as their offensive line, which is typically a team strength, is not up to the typical Boston College standard this season, while Clemson’s defensive line, even without Bryan Bresee, is one of the better units in college football.

If the Eagles are somehow able to give Phil Jurkovec time to throw look for Zay Flowers to be a tough cover for the battered Clemson secondary as he’s an NFL wideout talent.

This spread opened at -22 for the Tigers and shortly thereafter settled at 20.5 where it has remained for the most part.

It’s a tough number in that it straddles two key numbers in college football, 20 and 21, thereby leaving concerns about that half point hook for bettors.

The current numbers imply a score of 34.5-14 in Clemson’s favor, but there are models predicting a larger blowout than that.

It’s a tough read both on the spread and the total, as oddly enough being on the road could lead to a blowout, because if it gets out of hand the Tigers will be limited to their travel squad in garbage time and not the 100th-120th players on the squad.

Add to that Clemson is coming off two tough games, the last one exacting a physical and emotional toll, not to mention a trip to Tallahassee on the agenda next week.

Best Bet: Boston College +20.5

Ultimately for me it would be a stay-away game, but if I had a lean it would be to take Boston College and the points.

Simply put, it’s a large number, the Tigers are on the road and Dabo Swinney has proven he is not concerned about style points.  On top of that, it’s homecoming and the Red Bandana game and Swinney will not want to embarrass anyone in that environment.

The Tigers are far more talented than Boston College, but this is a situational play and a bet that the Eagles will play a defensive style that makes Clemson drive the field and an offensive style that will mimic a “four corners” offense in basketball.
