Clemson football has been voted as the 4th best team in the USA Today Coaches Poll, which was released Monday morning.

Alabama is the #1 team in the poll, with 54 first place votes. They are followed by Ohio State (5 first place votes) and Georgia (6 first place votes). Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas A&M, Utah, Oklahoma & Baylor round out the top ten. The only first place vote given to a team outside the top three was placed for Texas, which was ranked 18th in the poll.

Five ACC teams are ranked in the preseason poll. #12 NC State, #16 Pittsburgh, #17 Miami & #19 Wake Forest join Clemson in the poll.

Clemson will play four teams ranked in the preseason poll.

  • #19 Wake Forest 9/24 in Winston-Salem
  • #12 NC State 10/1 in Clemson
  • #5 Notre Dame 11/5 in South Bend
  • #17 Miami 11/19 in Clemson

Clemson football ranked in top 5 in USA Today Coaches Poll, four opponents also ranked in top 19

66 different coaches in the FBS vote in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Coach Swinney is not a voter this season. ACC coaches that do vote include Dino Babers (Syracuse), Dave Clawson (Wake Forest), Dave Doeran (NC State), Mike Elko (Duke), Jeff Hafley (Boston College), Pat Narduzzi (Pittsburgh), Brent Pry (Virginia Tech) & Scott Satterfield (Louisville).

While there has been plenty of criticism of the ACC in recent years, this year’s preseason poll shows an increase in conference teams ranked. The five teams ranked in this year’s poll is the most ACC teams ranked since 2010. The low point for the conference was in 2019, when only one team (#1 Clemson) was ranked. Perhaps the best news for the ACC is that both divisions are represented, with three programs from the Atlantic Division and two teams from the Coastal Division.

While Clemson’s placement in the USA Today coaches poll is an encouraging sign, the poll is not involved with deciding the teams that will earn a berth in the College Football Playoff. The first CFP poll will likely be released November 1, 2022, but that has not been confirmed.
