With a string of recent success one could be deluded into thinking Clemson football could get pretty much any recruit they wanted.

That’s not the case as the Tigers missed out on two recruits on Monday.

Four star defensive lineman Hunter Osborne of Trussville, Alabama stayed home and picked the Tide in a not surprising at all move that had been rumored for a while.

Many Clemson fans gave up on Osborne weeks ago as his plan began to leak and the Tide became a lock for his services.

Osborne is ranked 130th overall in the 247sports.com composite, the 18th best defensive lineman and 12 best player in Alabama.

Another four star prospect from the state of Alabama, huge offensive lineman Stanton Ramil, committed to Michigan State on Monday also.

The 6’7, 310 pound Ramil was ranked just inside the top 200 in the 247sports.com composite and came in at number 21 nationally among offensive tackles and 15th in the state of Alabama.

Ramil never visited Clemson officially, but kept the Tigers in his final group.  While the lack of an official visit should’ve been a clue to the odds of him landing in the Upstate.

There is sentiment that after missing on Ramil the Tigers could be done with the offensive line this cycle, per Jason Priester of AllClemson.com.

At defensive tackle the sentiment is Kayden McDonald will be an over sign if that comes to fruition.

Despite an impressive 2023 recruiting class Clemson football still has work to do after missing on two targets Monday

There are, however, still positions of need, notably running back, wide receiver and on the back end of the defense.

One could argue that given those guidelines, these weren’t crucial misses for Clemson, but let’s be honest these were two top 200 players the Tigers would have taken, especially Osborne.

While the defensive line is stacked this season, you can never have too many and there are sure to be a lot less talent next season despite the Tigers earlier successes on the recruiting trail.

The running back situation remains a mystery to me.  One one hand I get it.  The Tigers have three solid running backs with eligibility to spare.  On the other hand, so does almost every other team that the top backs are committing to, some of them arguably more than Clemson.

With the recent history of Travis Etienne and C.J. Spiller coaching the position, one would think Clemson would be in better shape, but that hasn’t been the case to date.
