Clemson football only had two players selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, but post-draft multiple players signed free agent contracts.

James Skalski – Linebacker, 2016-21

Signed by: Indianapolis Colts

Quick take: Much like Ben Boulware, Clemson’s rock in the middle of the defense is an ideal college player, but didn’t jump out to NFL scouts as a draftable prospect. There were questions about his speed and his size.

Sometimes, not getting drafted can be a blessing in disguise. Skalski had the opportunity to select his NFL destination, and he will attempt to make the roster of the Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are set on the first string at middle linebacker with Bobby Okereke, who has been a solid player since being drafted in 2019. The backup in the middle is not nearly as settled. They have several young linebackers, but most of them appear to be most suited to playing outside. While Skalski may not have all the ideal physical traits NFL scouts want to see in a linebacker, he has been able to demonstrate that he can be a very effective leader in the middle of the defense, which is something every team needs. He can also be a contributor on special teams.

Skalski might not make the main roster, but I like his chances of catching on to Indy’s practice squad.

Clemson highlights:

  • 310 tackles
  • 20.5 tackles for a loss
  • 10 sacks
  • 12 pass breakups
  • 2 fumble recoveries
  • 1 forced fumble
  • 1 touchdown

Draft Projections:

  • ESPN Jordan Reid: Undrafted
  • CBS Ryan Wilson: Undrafted
  • CBS Josh Edwards: Undrafted
  • Sporting News: Undrafted
  • Walterfootball.com: 4th Round
  • Drafttek: Undrafted

Dabo’s take (on Skalski not being on All-ACC team):

"“Not sure how (James) Skalski didn’t make it. He’s one of my top votes, for sure. I don’t think he even made honorable mention. If I’m correct, I don’t think Isaiah Simmons made honorable mention last year, and he’s probably up for Defensive Player of the Year. That just goes to show you … he was pretty good last year, too. That’s kind of how it goes, but I give a personal shout-out to Skalski because I think he’s a war daddy and has had as good of a year as any linebacker we’ve had.”"
