Clemson football fans never thought they’d get an opportunity to watch the Tigers beat former rival coach Will Muschamp again, but that didn’t turn out to be true.
Muschamp, who was originally hired as a defensive analyst for Georgia after getting fired from the South Carolina head coaching job, will be moving to an assistant role that will allow him to be an on-the-field coach again.
Muschamp will be taking over as the Special Teams Coordinator for Georgia in Scott Cochran’s absence.
Clemson football fans will love to see Coach Boom on the opposite sideline again
During his time as the South Carolina head coach, Muschamp was 0-4 against Clemson and lost to the Tigers by a combined score of 184-55. The lauded defensive genius gave up an average of 46 points per contest against Clemson football.
While Muschamp won’t be making many decisions that are instrumental in the outcome of the game, this still will serve as another fun storyline as we head into the matchup. In some ways, we believe that you could find a lot of comparisons between Kirby Smart and Will Muschamp.
When looking at Georgia’ talent under Smart, there’s no doubting that the Bulldogs should consistently be one of the top teams in the country. However, they’ve never gotten over that hump.
They were extremely close to beating Alabama in the National Championship back in 2017, but came up short. They’ve lost games they’re not supposed to– like against South Carolina with its third-string quarterback just a couple of years ago– and there’s just this constant underachiever vibe that comes out of the program.
It will be interesting to see if they’re able to overcome that this year– we know Bulldog fans believe they will, as they do every year– but there’s probably one thing we can all agree upon: If they do finally break through that ceiling, Will Muschamp won’t be the reason.
