If you’re a Clemson football fan and you’re on Twitter, one thing you’ve probably noticed about the platform is that the overwhelming majority of users absolutely despise Dabo Swinney.

Dabo Swinney, who doesn’t have any social media accounts, was trending on Twitter on Thursday- and much of that blew over into Friday- as thousands of users called for him to retire following a comment he made several years ago when he said he would consider moving on from College Football if college athletics were ever professionalized.

People ran with the headline and never looked into the context of what question was asked of Swinney and soon enough, it was an absolute wildfire.

Of course, for those who don’t know, Swinney wasn’t referencing NIL when he made that comment. He was talking about universities and institutions paying players as professional athletes and the downfalls that could come with it- such as having to manage a salary cap or institutions getting into a bidding war for a certain recruit.

But that didn’t stop thousands of fans- namely from Ohio State, Alabama and South Carolina- from voicing their opinion that the Clemson coach should resign, or interestingly enough, from many journalists and national publications.

Why do Twitter users, in particular, dislike Dabo Swinney?

The truth of the matter is that people- including national analysts and journalists- have disdain for Dabo Swinney because of certain quotes that have been taken out-of-context in the past or things that he has said that weren’t quite as ‘polished’ as they could’ve been. People love to run with a one-sentence headline rather than look at the entirety of a quote or the intent behind what he was saying.

There’s disdain for him among many fan bases because of how he has built the Clemson program and the fact that the Tigers are near the top every single year. There’s disdain for him based off political ideologies and his open faith. Many believe that Swinney’s personality is “all an act.”

We’re not going to address any of those things today because we know who Swinney is and the true character he has shown during his time in Clemson, but we’re just pointing out what Twitter users will say if you were to ask them why they’ve idealized him as ‘Public Enemy No. 1.’

Dabo Swinney could absolutely decimate Twitter with another National Championship

The one thing that would absolutely set the Twitter world on fire, though, would be if Clemson were to win another National Championship.

If you just do a Twitter search for Dabo Swinney daily, you’ll find many trolls who spend their time trying to bash him.

When Swinney has a press conference, he could say that ‘the sky is blue’ and many- we’re talking thousands- would try to find a way in which that quote is offensive and shows just ‘what a fake person he is.’

Can you imagine the uproar on that platform if Clemson were to win the National Championship?

After a solid two years full of hate that has only grown and seemingly will never fade, could you imagine the anguish and absolute disgust of these Twitter trolls if Swinney were to be the one who hoists the golden scepter at the end of the 2021 season? It would be almost unbearable for many of them.

Many have assumingly left the Clemson football program for dead and they believe the Tigers are cycling out because of two bad losses in the CFB Playoff in back-to-back years. The last thing they need is to find out that Clemson still has top-tier talent and that the Tigers may be deeper as a whole this year than they have been any season since 2018.

Swinney may not have any social media accounts, but he could nearly make the Twitter world implode if he were to win a National Championship.
