This past April, former Clemson football quarterback Trevor Lawrence became the first Tiger to ever be drafted number one overall by an NFL franchise. The Tigers had several players in the past taken in the Top 5 but none had ever been taken higher than fourth overall.

There are a lot of expectations of Lawrence at the next level but nothing that he cannot achieve as his work ethic and talent level are unmatched.

Trevor Lawrence may make program history again in 2021.

As the league’s overall pick in 2021, there are going to be a lot of eyes watching the 21-year-old rookie from Cartersville, GA.

If he can live up to the expectations set before him and drag the Jacksonville Jaguars to the playoffs in 2021, Lawrence will more than likely take home NFL offensive rookie of the year honors.

Clemson football has never had an NFL rookie of the year

Clemson Fan Nation’s Brad Senkiw had this to say about Trevor Lawrence being the favorite to win the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year award –

"There’s no question he’ll be the starting QB on Sept. 12 when the Jags open up against the Houston Texans. New Jacksonville head coach Urban Meyer made it clear from Day 1 that no one else is in the running. There simply is no competition. This is Lawrence’s offense to run, so there’s no doubt that he’ll have the chance to put up the numbers needed to win the award."

Since the turn of the century, nine of the 20 NFL rookie of the year selections have quarterbacks, eight winners were running backs and three have been wide receivers – the last two selections have been quarterbacks – Kyler Murray in 2019 and Justin Herbert in 2020.

Since the award started in 1967, quarterbacks have only won the award three straight times once and that was from 2010-2012 when Sam Bradford, Cam Newton, and Robert Griffin III were back-to-back-to-back winners.

There is no doubt that Trevor has the talent to take the league by storm in 2021.

Despite the early media reports of him “struggling” in camp sessions, once he completely recovers from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder and fully has a grasp on Darrell Bevell Super Bowl-winning offense, the sky is the limit for Lawrence.

Next. Tony Elliott is under a lot of pressure in 2021. dark
