Losing Dan Radakovich would be significant for Clemson football

It’s not all that often that Clemson football fans are paying attention to the happenings along the west coast when it comes to sports, but that’s exactly what will be happening over the course of the next few weeks.

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd reported that the Pac-12 is planning to fill its open commissioner position by late April and one of the names who has been closely tied to the opening is none other than Clemson AD Dan Radakovich.

In his tweet about the commissioner search, Dodd mentioned Radakovich, Gene Smith (Ohio State AD) and Oliver Luck (former NCAA senior administrator) as three names who have been mentioned frequently with the position.

While no one could blame Radakovich for wanting to take a commissioner position, it would be a major loss for Clemson Athletics as a whole, including Clemson football.

Radakovich was instrumental in bringing new facilities to Clemson football and has consistently been supportive of Dabo Swinney and making changes needed to keep the Tigers among the top programs in the nation when it comes to facilities and resources.

But it’s not just the football program that has benefitted from Radakovich.

Clemson saw a completely new constructed Littlejohn under his watch and the Tigers added a softball team, which is currently ranked inside the top-25 in the nation.

Many leave a ‘red mark’ on Radakovich’s record because the Clemson Track & Field program was dissolved under his leadership, but no one can really argue that the Clemson Athletic Department is better because of his work over almost a decade now.

If Radakovich does choose to leave Clemson to head out to the Pac-12, he’ll be in a completely different environment and he’ll have to deal with quite a bit as that conference has been what many consider to be the most mismanaged conference in America.
