What Clemson football would do with a 64-team CFB Playoff

Can you imagine what it would be like to watch Clemson football compete in a 64-team CFB Playoff bracket?

November Madness would be absolutely wild. You’d have teams from all over the Power-5 and the Group of 5 represented in the field and it would be a type of event that fans could only marvel at.

With March Madness now upon us, ESPN unveiled what a 64-team CFB bracket might look like and it has us intrigued.

Clemson football is listed as a No. 1 seed along with Alabama, Ohio State and Oklahoma. Seeds were selected largely using ESPN’s SP+ formula for the upcoming 2021 season.

Let’s focus in on  what the region headlined by Clemson football would look like

ESPN senior writer Chris Lowe has Clemson as the No. 1 seed in the East Region. He predicts the first-round and the second-round of the matchups, as well.

Clemson as the 1-seed would take on 16-seeded Florida State in the first-round. Lowe has the Tigers winning 42-14 and, honestly, if this were real, it might be much worse than that following the debacle in Tallahassee last season.

2-seeded Miami advanced with a win over 15-seeded Missouri and 3-seeded Washington beat 14-seeded Tulsa. Other notable matchups in the region? 6-seeded Texas beat 11-seeded Arkansas and 9-seeded Coastal Carolina beat 8-seeded Minnesota.

You know what that means? We’d see Clemson and Coastal Carolina in the second-round.

Lowe predicts the Tigers narrowly escaping the Chanticleers with a 34-31 victory. He also has Miami over 10-seeded Boise State, Texas over Washington and 5-seeded Utah over 13-seeded Baylor.

That sets a Region Semifinals of 1-seeded Clemson vs. 5-seeded Utah, and 2-seeded Miami vs. 6-seeded Texas.

While Lowe doesn’t go on to predict who would end up winning the region and advancing to the Final Four, we think it would be pretty realistic to take the Tigers over Utah and likely Texas over Miami.

The result would be a Clemson vs. Texas matchup in the Elite 8, a game that the Tigers should win.

In the end we’ll never know what a 64-team CFB bracket would look like, but it is a fun conversation to have in the midst of the spring.
