Clemson football: Breaking down latest offer to Michigan DL decommit
Clemson football pulls trigger on scholarship offer for Michigan DL decommit
The interest from the Clemson football program developed rather quickly in the Tigers’ latest offer for the Class of 2022 recruiting cycle.
Clemson offered 4-star Alex VanSumeren earlier this week in an interesting development. VanSumeren, who had been committed to Michigan for more than a year, recently decided to reopen his recruitment. That, in turn, led the Tigers to take another look at him and put their name in the hat as he begins to move forward with the recruiting process.
VanSumeren is ranked as the No. 16 DT in the nation and the No. 4 overall player in the state of Michigan, according to the 247 Sports’ Composite Player Rankings. Depending on which recruiting service you use, he weighs in at somewhere between 285-300 pounds and stands at 6-foot-3.
Since his decommitment, VanSumeren has received offers from Clemson, Texas A&M, Oregon, Wisconsin and Boston College.
Clemson football has a few defensive line targets on the board and it will be interesting to see how the Tigers progress with VanSumeren
The top defensive tackle target in the Class of 2022 for Clemson remains 5-star Travis Shaw from Greensboro, NC. That being said, Shaw is still early in his recruitment and there is no telling how that ends up when it’s all said and done.
Clemson and North Carolina are considered the frontrunners for Shaw’s services, but that doesn’t mean that more teams can’t (or won’t) get involved before he makes a final decision.
VanSumeren announced his scholarship offer from Clemson by saying he had an ‘amazing conversation’ with the Tigers’ entire defensive staff. That shows, at least in my opinion, that Clemson is coming after him relatively hard and that there is legitimate interest in him as a priority target moving forward.
The thought with this 2022 recruiting cycle has been that the Tigers will most likely bring in two defensive tackles to maintain depth and VanSumeren paired with Shaw could be a dangerous combination.
