Clemson football: Breaking down the QB position by star-ratings
Breaking down the Clemson football QB room by star-ratings
The talent that the Clemson football program has begun to accumulate over the last half-decade and beyond is uncanny.
The Tigers- even in their conservative approach to recruiting- are consistently bringing in top-five classes and they’re attracting some of the top names in the country year-in and year-out.
The quarterback position has been no exception.
The Tigers are now about to have two starting quarterbacks in the NFL- Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence- at the same time and their current starting quarterback isn’t far behind.
As we continue our series breaking down each Clemson football position by star-ratings, here’s a look at the quarterback room. Keep in mind, we are using the 247 Sports’ Composite Player Rankings for these ratings.
- D.J. Uiagalelei (5-star, No. 1 Pro-Style QB in Class of 2020)
- Taisun Phommachanh (4-star, No. 4 dual QB in Class of 2019)
- Hunter Helms (3-star, No. 86 Pro-Style QB in Class of 2020)
- Bubba Chandler (3-star, No. 18 Pro-Style QB in Class of 2021)
- Will Taylor (3-star, No. 91 ATH in Class of 2021)
The quarterback situation is interesting for Clemson football in 2021
Even though there is a pseudo-battle happening to see who will be Trevor Lawrence’s replacement, we all know who has already won.
D.J. Uiagalelei won the second-string job before the season ever began last fall and he is going to be the starting quarterback this year. We’ve already begun talking about the ‘Big Cinco Era’ and what he is going to bring to the table for the program as the new leader of the offense.
That’s where things get interesting, though.
If Uiagalelei does win the starting spot- like we all think he will- where does that leave Taisun Phommachanh? Is he going to be content to be a backup like Chase Brice for a season or two? Will he look to transfer at another point? Will he work at another position?
Either way you look at it, there could be some shakeup to this room and we very well could see a situation where Uiagalelei- a 5-star- is backed up by a 3-star in Hunter Helms or even incoming freshman Bubba Chandler.
