Clemson football program looking to make history in the Sugar Bowl

The Clemson football program will be looking to change and make history this Friday evening when they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl.

If history has taught us anything, we know that the Clemson football program and the Bayou simply don’t go together well.

As a matter of fact, the Tigers are 0-4 in postseason matchups in the state of Louisiana and they are 0-2 all-time in the Sugar Bowl.

  • Clemson lost the 1959 Sugar Bowl to LSU (7-0 in New Orleans)
  • Clemson lost the 1985 Independence Bowl to Minnesota (20-13 in Shreveport)
  • Clemson lost the 2018 Sugar Bowl to Alabama (24-6 in New Orleans)
  • Clemson lost the 2020 National Championship to LSU (42-25 in New Orleans)

Those four losses accumulate to the Tigers being outscored 93-44 all-time.

As Clemson football fans remember the great (or not so great) memories they’ve made on Bourbon Street throughout the past few years, the truth still remains: The state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans have not been kind to the Tigers.

It’s time for Clemson football to right the wrong and overcome history in New Orleans

The Tigers have not established great memories or program-building victories in the state of Louisiana, but how great would it be to finally overcome that streak of losses with a win against newly-formed rival Ohio State in what could be Travis Etienne‘s second-to-last game ever?

For those that don’t remember, Etienne is from Jennings, Louisiana, which is a little less than three hour trip to New Orleans.

It’s time for Clemson to right the wrong and there’s no better storybook ending to their more than half-a-century struggles in the state of Louisiana than to have Etienne come away with a victory in his home state that punches the Tigers’ ticket to the National Championship.

Next. OSU fans should direct anger at Big Ten, not Dabo Swinney. dark

Will Clemson football make history Friday night or will it be yet another heartbreaker down on the Bayou?
