John Swofford sides with Florida State over Clemson football

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney received no support from ACC Commissioner John Swofford following the postponement of the Tigers’ game with FSU this past weekend.

Swinney, who was absolutely livid when the matchup with the Seminoles was canceled this past weekend, told the media that COVID was used as an excuse to cancel the game. He also suggested that he wouldn’t want to travel back down to Tallahassee unless FSU was going to fund the Tigers’ travels for another trip.

Following those comments and the weekend’s events, ACC Commissioner John Swofford spoke with ESPN and took Florida State’s side all the while remaining politically correct.

"“It’s unfortunate and I don’t think anyone is in a position to question the decision making of a medical officer in this type of situation,” Swofford said via ESPN. “That’s where the decision lies, and in the eyes of our presidents and athletic directors, that’s where the decision should lie.”"

Swofford went on to say that no one was at blame for the cancellation but he never took the step of laying out the case for what Swinney has been preaching for the past two days.

"“I don’t think there’s any blame here,” Swofford said. “We’ve got to remember the world in which we’re operating right now. People are following the protocols as agreed upon before the season started, and people are trying to make the best decisions for the right reasons, and you respect that.”"

Clemson football was never going to get the support of Swofford anyway

It shouldn’t be surprising that Swofford would take an opinion that has been so popular taken by the national media.

He never addressed the fact that Pittsburgh had a positive player travel down to Tallahassee just two weeks ago against the Seminoles and the game was played. He also never noted that Clemson football had followed all the guidelines and done absolutely everything asked of them by the conference’s guidelines.

He also decided to leave out in his interview that his own medical officers had given the ‘okay’ for the game to be played.

But who should expect anything else from Swofford?

dark. Next. Could Clemson vs. Pitt be in jeopardy?

Clemson football fans have been counting down the days for Swofford’s retirement for quite some time and there’s no doubt that this latest situation will only amplify those desires and anticipations for him to step away as the leader of the conference.
