Vegas odds lists two Clemson football coaches as candidates for South Carolina job opening

Two current Clemson football coaches are considered part of the ‘favorites list’ to land the head coaching job at South Carolina, according to Vegas.

Vegas has released its odds on names to watch in terms of the vacant South Carolina head coaching job- as the Gamecocks fired Will Muschamp after five years of mediocrity.

Here’s a look at the coaches with the greatest odds to land the job, according to the odds listed by Vegas.

  • Billy Napier 3/1
  • Hugh Freeze 4/1
  • Shane Beamer 5/1
  • Jamey Chadwell 6/1
  • Luke Fickell 7/1
  • Tony Elliott 15/2
  • Scott Satterfield 8/1
  • Bill O’Brien 9/1
  • Brent Venables 10/1
  • Steve Sarkisian 10/1
  • Will Healy 10/1
  • Joe Brady 12/1
  • Jeff Monken 12/1
  • Bill Clark 14/1

Some names at the top of the list don’t seem all that surprising. We’ve all heard about Hugh Freeze and Jamey Chadwell being considered two of the top contenders for the job. However, Shane Beamer at 5-to-1 is pretty interesting and then of Clemson note, there are three guys.

Former Clemson Offensive Coordinator Billy Napier has the highest odds of landing the job. Current coordinators Tony Elliott (15/2) and Brent Venables (10/1) are also listed.

It doesn’t seem likely either Clemson football coach would make a lateral move to South Carolina

It’s fun for Vegas- and fans alike- to fantasize about what might happen, but let’s be honest here: Why would Elliott or Venables be interested in the job?

South Carolina won’t be offering much more for their head coaching job than what the two are making now- they’re both two of the highest paid assistants in the country- and you’d be entering a program with a complete rebuild in mind, knowing just what you’ve got to deal with in your own state with the juggernaut Clemson football program.

The more you think about it, the more this would feel like a lateral move for both Elliott and Venables, who have turned down jobs and opportunities in the past.

Napier could be headed to Columbia and that wouldn’t be surprising considering the excellent job he has done at Louisiana Lafayette, but it would be a complete shock for either of the Tiger coordinators to leave for that job opening.
