Clemson football will face off against longtime rival Georgia Tech Saturday in Atlanta.

For a long time, games between Clemson football and Georgia Tech were close and competitive – that has not been the case for most of the last five seasons. Blowouts have taken a little bit of sting out of this rivalry.

However, second-year Tech head coach Geoff Collins is looking to change that and he is recruiting the type of athletes that it takes in order to bring Georgia Tech back to respectability.

Enter Yellow Jackets freshman quarterback Jeff Sims.

Sims ended up at Tech on complete accident as he was originally a longtime commitment to FSU. When new FSU coach Mike Norvell took over for Willie Taggart, he let Sims know that he no longer had a scholarship offer and that he needed to look elsewhere and that is when Collins jumped in.

Through the first five weeks of the 2020 ACC season, Jeff Sims has been twice been named the ACC rookie of the week.

Jeff Sims has the respect of Clemson football coach Brent Venables.

Clemson football defensive coordinator Brent Venables has been impressed with what he has seen from the freshman quarterback. “Like a baby giraffe out there, but he’s got speed, he’s got length, got a big arm. Good instincts for a freshman. The game is slow for him.”

Sims has been able to flourish early behind a Georgia Tech offensive line that has become much better than in previous years under former head coach Paul Johnson. They have given up just two sacks coming into this week’s matchup.

Sure, a lot of that has to do with Sims’ ability to move throughout the pocket and escape when needed and that Tech hasn’t faced a defensive front like he will Saturday but Tech deserves a lot of credit for how far they have come under Geoff Collins.

While the final score Saturday will not reflect the strides that Tech has made since we last saw them, they are on the right track and Jeff Sims will help them get there much like Tajh Boyd and Deshaun Watson helped Clemson football come up.
