Clemson vs. Georgia: A Potential Rematch of All-Time QB Greats?

The last time we saw Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields take the field against each other, Clemson was beating Ohio State in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl.

Lawrence led his team on a 4-play, 94-yard drive that ended in the end zone and Fields threw a pick in the end zone on the ensuing drive that officially clinched the game for the Tigers.

While fans across the country were looking forward to the potential rematch between the two talented quarterbacks this season, those hopes were put to bed after the Big Ten announced that it was canceling its fall season.

Clemson, on the other hand, is scheduled to open up the 2020 season next week at Wake Forest.

While the Big Ten has since began to have second thoughts about its decision and is reportedly even considering moving its start date back to the middle of October, there is one other way we could potentially see a Lawrence-Fields rematch. Though, it seems quite strange.

Could it be a CFB Playoff game between Clemson and Georgia that yields the rematch?

Justin Fields was in Athens this past weekend at Georgia’s scrimmage and rumors have crazily swirled over the past few days about a potential transfer. All of that was amplified with the news that UGA QB Jamie Newman announced that he would be opting out of the 2020 season.

Bulldog fans are hoping that Fields, who transferred from Georgia to Ohio State, may make a bit of a homecoming trip for his final season of College Football.

Now, many are quick to point out two factors in this decision that just aren’t really relevant. They talk about the academics and the NCAA as mitigating factors for why Fields couldn’t transfer, even if he wanted to. That’s simply not true.

Universities make exceptions all the time for late semester additions and the NCAA hasn’t had any real authority in quite some time. If Fields chose to transfer, the University of Georgia would have no problem getting him enrolled in classes and the NCAA would grant his immediate eligibility waiver, without question.

That being said, I still don’t think this happens or that Fields has ever even seriously considered it.

If Fields is going to play any more College Football, it seems likely to me that it will be at Ohio State or nowhere. You’d be asking him to learn a brand new play-book in less than a few weeks and suddenly be able to come in and perform at a high level. That’s just not going to happen.

It’s certainly possible that he makes the move, but I don’t think we see Clemson facing Justin Fields again with him wearing any other color than scarlet. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s more of a red.
