The next face of the Clemson football program

While most Clemson football fans have already given the ‘Trevor Lawrence replacement’ status to star freshman D.J. Uiagalelei there is one other Tiger who hopes to have a say in the matter.

Clemson football redshirt freshman Taisun Phommachanh was listed as the sole second-string QB on the Tigers’ depth chart heading into fall camp and from all accounts, he’s had a really solid spring.

Dabo Swinney spoke of the QB room earlier this month and said that he feels as if this group of quarterbacks is as good any you will see.

Clemson football, led by Trevor Lawrence, is will be looking for his replacement following the 2020 season and Phommachanh will certainly have a say in that decision.

Don’t count out Phommachanh yet, Clemson football fans

It’s easy to see why we’re so quick to jump on the DJ Uiagalelei train when it comes to who will be the next quarterback for the Clemson football program.

He is 6-foot-5, 245 pounds and has an absolute cannon for an arm. Coaches have compared him to Trevor Lawrence in terms of his readiness coming in as a freshman and there is reason to believe he could see significant playing time this season, with the Tigers heavily favored in many of their games.

That being said, we shouldn’t be so quick to forget about Phommachanh or count him out of the race.

Even this time next year, he’ll have an extra year in the system- which means more opportunities to earn the coaches’ trust. He has great athleticism and his arm isn’t so bad, either. Phommachanh has the potential to develop into a quarterback very similar to Deshaun Watson and there’s no reason to believe he won’t go down without competition.

It will be interesting to see what happens at the second-string QB position over the course of this season and into next, but we shouldn’t count anyone out of the race just yet.
